Suppose people to be at the station a long time before the train is due: must wait. (a) Educe that there should be sheltered and warm places provided for them to wait in; called.waiting-rooms. (Write and spell.) Elicit that people have to pay money for riding in trains. ILLUSTRATIONS. (a) Refer to cold or wet weather: passengers in the open-air would be cold or wet. Ask what is given them as a receipt for the money: a ticket. Educe that there must be a place where tickets are kept; called ticket-office. (Write on the board.) Other offices may be referred to, such as telegraph office, left-luggage office: also rooms, such as station-master's room and porter's room. (b) Elicit that the boat could not come into the school for them. Educe that the railway train cannot go into the waiting room for passengers: passengers must go to the train. Ask the name of that part of the station on which people stand in readiness for jumping into the train, (c) Platform. (Write on the board) Explain that the platform is elevated, in order that passengers may not have far to step when entering a train. People at the Station. Give a graphic description of the hurry and bustle of people on the platform who are going away. Ask why all this haste: in order that they may not be late. Elicit that when the train stops, some people get out of and others into the carriages. Elicit that those who are getting in are going away, and those who are getting out are at the end of their journey, or a stage of their journey. Refer to railway servants: wear a peculiar dress.
