Book Description
Bearing his medical discharge from the fledgling American Expeditionary Force after only four months as a trainee in the 1st Massachusetts Ambulance Corps, the author became one of thousands of American youths who sought adventure and validation by traveling North to offer their wartime services as members of the C.E.F. His account, finished in 1927, chronicles his brief U.S. Army experience, and more extensively, the next 20 months--from the signing of his Attestation papers in September, 1917 in Fredericton, N.B., to his release from active duty at St John, in May, 1919--as a Canadian soldier. Beginning with basic drill and an introduction to light artillery in Canada, he moved on to more intensive training in England, to become a charter member of an entirely new unit--the 12th (6-inch howitzer) Battery, 3rd Brigade, CGA. Not just a record of combat in France, the story encompasses a totality of military life as it impacted the author and his close companions. He faithfully records battlefield and bivouac experiences, anecdotes of both legal and unsanctioned absences in five countries, the formation (and shattering) of close friendships, of the strange realization of his having been wounded, and gassed, and his consequent hospitalization and recovery. Following an unauthorized reunification with his Battery mates in Belgium, he describes the boredom of post war occupation, demobilization via Kinmel Park in Wales, his return to Canada, and finally, the long and eagerly anticipated, yet strangely abrupt and poignant emptiness that attended his return to civilian life. The author's highly personal and well documented narrative is enhanced by the inclusion of letters written home, numerous scans of photographs and memorabilia that survived his epoch journey as well as a number of original pen and ink drawings that complement his writing.

Book Description
In A New New Deal, the labor movement leaders Amy B. Dean and David B. Reynolds offer a bold new plan to revitalize American labor activism and build a sense of common purpose between labor and community organizations. Dean and Reynolds demonstrate how alliances organized at the regional level are the most effective tool to build a voice for working people in the workplace, community, and halls of government. The authors draw on their own successes to offer in-depth, contemporary case studies of effective labor-community coalitions. They also outline a concrete strategy for building power at the regional level. This pioneering model presents the regional building blocks for national change. A diverse audience—both within the labor movement and among its allies—will welcome this clear, detailed, and inspiring presentation of regional power-building tactics, which include deep coalition-building, leadership development, policy research, and aggressive political action. A New New Deal explores successful coalitions forged in Los Angeles, Boston, Denver, San Jose, New Haven, and Atlanta toward goals such as universal health insurance for children and sensible redevelopment efforts that benefit workers as well as businesses. The authors view partnerships between labor and grassroots organizations as a mutually beneficial strategy based on shared goals, resulting in a broadened membership base and increased organizational capacity. They make the innovative argument that the labor movement can steward both industry and community and make manifest the ways in which workplace battles are not the parochial concerns of isolated workers, but a fundamental struggle for America's future. Drawing on historical parallels, the authors illustrate how long-term collaborations between labor and community organizations are sowing the seeds of a new New Deal.

Book Description
Surveillance is commonly rationalized as a solution for existing problems such as crime and terrorism. This book explores how surveillance, often disguised as risk management or harm reduction, is also at the root of a range of social and political problems. Canadian scholars from diverse disciplines interrogate the moral and ideological bases as well as the material effects of surveillance in policing, consumerism, welfare administration, disaster management, popular culture, moral regulation, news media, social movements, and anti-terrorism campaigns.
