Book Description
Excerpt from Northwestern University Record, Vol. 1: June, 1893 As an immediate object for which to work, the Guild decided to raise a fund of for an Art Gallery and Museum, believing that such a building, to house the present and future collections of the University, would be of great educational value alike to the students and to citizens of Evanston. The fact that the natural history collections of the University are in part stored away from lack of space for their proper installment, was a strong argument in favor of the Art and Museum building. It was further thought that valuable gifts of works of art and natural history collections would be made to the University if a suitable building were provided for their reception. Book Description
Excerpt from Northwestern University Record, Vol. 1: March, 1893 As for the post graduate course, the number of students pursuing it was small, and the degree conferred, that of Master of Laws, is one which has been properly abolished. On some great man whose life had been spent in the acquisition of the law, on a Coke, a Chitty, a Story, such a degree might aptly be conferred; but to dub a young sprig of the law, who has studied the subject but three years (a term which should be prescribed for the Bachelor's degree) Master of Laws, is to make the degree practically meaningless. Excerpt from The Northwestern University Record, Vol. 2: June 1895 The session adjourns promptly at ten p. M. With the Coffee Club Doxology. While the Club does not intend or pretend to do great things, it is believed that it has, in some slight degree, attained the objects for which it was founded. There is a little more interest in the best literature, a little bet ter talking, and a little less clannishness in our college community than before the club began. Book Description
For some time now, the study of cognitive development has been far and away the most active discipline within developmental psychology. Although there would be much disagreement as to the exact proportion of papers published in develop mental journals that could be considered cognitive, 50% seems like a conserva tive estimate. Hence, a series of scholarly books devoted to work in cognitive development is especially appropriate at this time. The Springer Series in Cognitive Development contains two basic types of books, namely, edited collections of original chapters by several autbors, and original volumes written by one author or a small group of authors. The flagship for the Springer Series is a serial publication of the "advances" types, carrying the sub title Progress in Cognitive Development Research. Each volume in the Progress sequence is strongly thematic, in that it is limited to some well-defmed domain of cognitive-developmental research (e. g. , logical and mathematical development, development of learning). All Progress volumes will be edited collections. Editors of such collections, upon consultation with the Series Editor, may elect to have their books published either as contributions to the Progress sequence or as sepa rate volumes. All books written by one author or a small group of authors are being published as separate volumes within the series. A fairly broad defmition of cognitive development is being used in the selec tion of books for this series.

Book Description
This six-volume set focuses on Latin American, Caribbean, and Asian immigration, which accounts for nearly 80 percent of all new immigration to the United States. The volumes contain the essential scholarship of the last decade and present key contributions reflecting the major theoretical, empirical, and policy debates about the new immigration. The material addresses vital issues of race, gender, and socioeconomic status as they intersect with the contemporary immigration experience. Organized by theme, each volume stands as an independent contribution to immigration studies, with seminal journal articles and book chapters from hard-to-find sources, comprising the most important literature on the subject. The individual volumes include a brief preface presenting the major themes that emerge in the materials, and a bibliography of further recommended readings. In its coverage of the most influential scholarship on the social, economic, educational, and civil rights issues revolving around new immigration, this collection provides an invaluable resource for students and researchers in a wide range of fields, including contemporary American history, public policy, education, sociology, political science, demographics, immigration law, ESL, linguistics, and more.
