Book Description
This book introduces entirely new invariants never considered before, in homological algebra and commutative (and even non-commutative) algebra. The C-completion C(M), and higher C-completions, Cn(M), are defined for an arbitrary left module M over a topological ring A. Spectral sequences are defined that use these invariants. Given a left module over a topological ring A, under mild conditions the usual Hausdorff completion: M^ can be recovered from the C-completion C(M), by taking the quotient module by the closure of {0}.The new invariants and tools in this book are expected to be used in the study of p-adic cohomology in algebraic geometry; and also in the study of p-adic Banach spaces — by replacing the cumbersome 'complete tensor product' of p-adic Banach spaces, with the more sophisticated 'C-complete tensor product', discussed in this book.It is also not unlikely that the further study of these new invariants may well develop into a new branch of abstract mathematics - connected with commutative algebra, homological algebra, and algebraic topology.

Book Description
It is by no means clear what comprises the "heart" or "core" of algebra, the part of algebra which every algebraist should know. Hence we feel that a book on "our heart" might be useful. We have tried to catch this heart in a collection of about 150 short sections, written by leading algebraists in these areas. These sections are organized in 9 chapters A, B, . . . , I. Of course, the selection is partly based on personal preferences, and we ask you for your understanding if some selections do not meet your taste (for unknown reasons, we only had problems in the chapter "Groups" to get enough articles in time). We hope that this book sets up a standard of what all algebraists are supposed to know in "their" chapters; interested people from other areas should be able to get a quick idea about the area. So the target group consists of anyone interested in algebra, from graduate students to established researchers, including those who want to obtain a quick overview or a better understanding of our selected topics. The prerequisites are something like the contents of standard textbooks on higher algebra. This book should also enable the reader to read the "big" Handbook (Hazewinkel 1999-) and other handbooks. In case of multiple authors, the authors are listed alphabetically; so their order has nothing to do with the amounts of their contributions.

Book Description
Slenderness is a concept relevant to the fields of algebra, set theory, and topology. This first book on the subject is systematically presented and largely self-contained, making it ideal for researchers and graduate students. The appendix gives an introduction to the necessary set theory, in particular to the (non-)measurable cardinals, to help the reader make smooth progress through the text. A detailed index shows the numerous connections among the topics treated. Every chapter has a historical section to show the original sources for results and the subsequent development of ideas, and is rounded off with numerous exercises. More than 100 open problems and projects are presented, ready to inspire the keen graduate student or researcher. Many of the results are appearing in print for the first time, and many of the older results are presented in a new light.

Book Description
This book provides an introduction to topological groups and the structure theory of locally compact abelian groups, with a special emphasis on Pontryagin-van Kampen duality, including a completely self-contained elementary proof of the duality theorem. Further related topics and applications are treated in separate chapters and in the appendix.

Book Description
This book is designed for the reader who wants to get a general view of the terminology of General Topology with minimal time and effort. The reader, whom we assume to have only a rudimentary knowledge of set theory, algebra and analysis, will be able to find what they want if they will properly use the index. However, this book contains very few proofs and the reader who wants to study more systematically will find sufficiently many references in the book. Key features: • More terms from General Topology than any other book ever published• Short and informative articles• Authors include the majority of top researchers in the field• Extensive indexing of terms
