Book Description
A Living Work of Art: The Norton Simon Museum Sculpture Garden tells the fascinating story of the evolution of the Museum property into the lush and inspiring garden it is today. After a rich history as a California landmark and art institution, the Museum and garden underwent a major renovation in the late 1990s under the direction of architect Frank Gehry. As part of the Museum's renovation, landscape designer Nancy Goslee Power reimagined the property, transforming it into a verdant park inspired by Monet's garden at Giverny. The spectacular pond and year-round palette of color delight visitors, as do the monumental sculptures that greet visitors at the entrance, and then surprise those exploring the meandering paths in the main garden: works by Aristide Maillol, Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Robert Rauschenberg, and others. The lower garden, with Indian and Cambodian sculptures, provides a contemplative backdrop for the Museum's South and Southeast Asian collection. Contents: Acknowledgments; Foreword; Introduction by Sally A. Swaney; The Garden by Nancy Goslee Power; American and European Sculpture by Leah Lehmbeck, Tom Norris and Gloria Williams Sander; Indian and Southeast Asian Sculpture by Melody Rod-ari; Selected Bibliography; Index; Image Credits and Permissions.

Book Description
Due to the technological advances of the nineteenth century, an abundance of black drawing media exploded onto the market. Charcoal, conte crayon, and fabricated black chalks and crayons; fixatives; various papers; and many lifting devices gave rise to an unprecedented amount of experimentation. Indeed, innovation became the rule, as artists developed their own unique—and often experimental—processes. The exploration of black media in drawing is inextricably bound up with the exploration of black in prints, and this volume presents an integrated study that rises above specialization in one over the other. Noir brings together such diverse artists as Francisco de Goya, Maxime Lalanne, Gustave Courbet, Odilon Redon, and Georges Seurat and explores their inventive works on paper. Sidelining labels like “conservative” or “avant-garde,” the essays in this book employ all the tools that art history and modern conservation have given us, inviting the reader to look more broadly at the artists’ methods and materials. This volume accompanies an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 9 to May 15, 2016.

Book Description
Bringing forth fresh perspectives on Manet's art by established scholars, this volume places this compelling and elusive artist's painted oeuvre within a broader cultural context, and links his artistic preoccupations with literary and musical currents. Rather than seeking consensus on his art through one methodology, or focusing on one crucial work or period, this collection investigates the range of Manet's art in the context of his time and considers how his vision has shaped subsequent interpretations. Specific essays explore the relationship between Manet and Whistler; Emile Zola's attitude toward the artist; Manet's engagement with moral and ethical questions in his paintings; and the heritage of Charles Baudelaire and Clement Greenberg in critical responses to Manet. Through these and other analyses, this volume illuminates the scope of Manet's career, and indicates the crucial position the artist held in generating a modernist avant-garde aesthetic.

Book Description
This beautifully illustrated work brings together more than one hundred objects from the J. Paul Getty Museum’s collection of European decorative arts. Included here is a generous selection of French and Italian furniture from the mid-sixteenth to the early nineteenth century. Masterpieces by André-Charles Boulle, Bernard (II) van Risenburgh, and others reveal the virtuoso craftsmanship that makes these objects such compelling examples of the furniture maker’s art. Many of the Museum’s finest pieces of porcelain, glass, and tin-glazed earthenware are also represented. Tapestries from Gobelins and Beauvais, bronze firedogs from Fontainebleau, and a lathe-turned ivory goblet of astonishing complexity from Saxony are among the other highlights of this handsome volume.
