Book Description
This paper describes the construction and operation of the small-angle neutron scattering instrument which has been set up at the Oak Ridge Research Reactor at ORNL. Motivation for work on this system to date has been the demonstration of the feasibility of the Borkowski-Kopp position-sensitive area detector and the use of pyrolytic graphite monochromating crystal pairs for small angle neutron scattering research. For a relatively modest cost, a serviceable experimental capability has been achieved. It is planned that some of the experience developed at this facility will be incorporated in a proposed large-scale apparatus at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and that this facility will continue in use for preliminary scattering tests.

Book Description
Small-angle neutron scattering instruments at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's High Flux Isotope Reactor were upgraded in area detectors from the large, single volume crossed-wire detectors originally installed to staggered arrays of linear position-sensitive detectors (LPSDs). The specific geometry of the LPSD array requires that approaches to data reduction traditionally employed be modified. Here, two methods for correcting the geometric distortion produced by the LPSD array are presented and compared. The first method applies a correction derived from a detector sensitivity measurement performed using the same configuration as the samples are measured. In the second method, a solid angle correction is derived that can be applied to data collected in any instrument configuration during the data reduction process in conjunction with a detector sensitivity measurement collected at a sufficiently long camera length where the geometric distortions are negligible. Furthermore, both methods produce consistent results and yield a maximum deviation of corrected data from isotropic scattering samples of less than 5% for scattering angles up to a maximum of 35°. The results are broadly applicable to any SANS instrument employing LPSD array detectors, which will be increasingly common as instruments having higher incident flux are constructed at various neutron scattering facilities around the world.

Book Description
This Advanced Study Institute was held at \-lellesley College, Wellesley, MA. , from 3 to 12 August 1980. It followed by four years the second "Capri ~,chool on Photon Correlation Spectroscopy". During the intervening period there had been many new applications of dynamic light scattering techniques to the study of systems whose properties depend either on collective molecular interactions or on the formation or activity of supramo1ecu1ar structures. Con sequently, emphasis at this conference was on light scattering studies of subjects such as dynamical correlations in dense polymer solutions, phase transitions in gels, spinodal decomposition of binary fluids, Benard instabilities in nonequilibrium fluids, the formation of micelles and phospholipid vesicles, and movements of the molecular assemblies of muscle tissue. The instructional pro gramme also included tutorial lectures on two complementary spec troscopic techniques which have benefited from dramatic advances in instrumentation, these being small angle X-ray (SAXS) and small angle neutron (SANS) scattering. Strong cold neutron and synchro tron X-ray sources have become available, and data now can be acquired rapidly with newly developed position-sensitive detectors. Several reviews of recent applications of SAXS and SANS were also provided. The organizers of the ASI hoped to provide a forum for theoreticians and experimentalists to assess advances in fields which, although related, were sufficiently different that a great deal of unfamiliar information could be communicated. The order ing of the papers in this volume closely approximates that of the talks presented at the Advanced Study Institute.

Book Description
The objective of this proposal is to upgrade the new small-angle neutron diffractometer (SAND) instrument in the Department of Energy's scientific user program at the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) by installing a state-of-the-art position-sensitive area detector with higher spatial resolution, greater stability, and a capability for high count rates. This report includes the system description, installation, preliminary testing and calibration of the Model 2410N PSPC System delivered to ANL/IPNS.
