Book Description
Excerpt from New Reclamation Era, Vol. 19 J. M. Patterson, chairman of the Georgia Reclamation Committee, stated that we must educate the public and the legislatures to the new conception of reclamation; that this proposed work does not mean the bringing into production of large areas of agricultural land, but of making contented, prosperous, organized rural communities. Dr. Burdette G. Lewis, chairman of the Florida Reclamation Committee, dis cussed the resolution, which was then adopted unanimously by the conference. Hon. Walter F. Lineberger, former Member of Congress, and consulting engineer, stated that he believed that it is fundamentally sound to extend the work of the Bureau of Reclamation to include the South; that he is heartily in favor of the great program outlined, adding that this is more than a proposition for te claiming land; it is a great social and eco nomic movement of the most vital benefit to our whole country. Book Description
Written at the height of Stalin's first "five-year plan" for the industrialization of Soviet Russia and the parallel campaign to collectivize Soviet agriculture, Andrei Platonov's The Foundation Pit registers a dissonant mixture of utopian longings and despair. Furthermore, it provides essential background to Platonov's parody of the mainstream Soviet "production" novel, which is widely recognized as one of the masterpieces of twentieth-century Russian prose. In addition to an overview of the work's key themes, it discusses their place within Platonov's oeuvre as a whole, his troubled relations with literary officialdom, the work's ideological and political background, and key critical responses since the work's first publication in the West in 1973.
