Book Description
Carolyn Kolb provides a delightful and detailed look into the heart of her city, New Orleans. She is a former Times-Picayune reporter and current columnist for New Orleans Magazine, where versions of these essays appeared as “Chronicles of Recent History.” Kolb takes her readers, both those who live in New Orleans and those who love it as visitors, on a virtual tour of her favorite people and places. Divided into sections on food, Mardi Gras, literature, and music, these short essays can be read in one gulp or devoured slowly over time. Either way, the reader will find a welcome companion and guide in Kolb. In bringing her stories up to date, Kolb's writings reflect an ongoing pattern of life in her fascinating city. Since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, some of these things remembered will never return. Some of the people whose stories Kolb tells are no longer with us. It is important to her, and to us, that they are not forgotten. Kolb, and her readers, can honor them by sharing and enjoying their stories. As Kolb says, “When things fail, when the lights go out and the roof caves in and the water rises, all that remains, ultimately, is the story.” This collection of such stories was made with love.

Book Description
One of the many unique characteristics of the City of New Orleans is the way the people speak. The historical roots of the city, with its African, French, Native American, and Spanish populations, produced everyday words that are still used by some families well into the twenty-first century. Many of these words and expressions might puzzle some people who hear them today. When choosing a title for this little book, there was no difficulty selecting the one used by this writer. Since I believe it conveys the exuberance of playing on the banquette and the tranquility of sitting on the galerie. The word banquette referred to the early sidewalks that lined the streets of New Orleans. Its origin has been attributed to the fact that, in the early French colonial period, the city was plagued with pools of water that settled into wagon tracks and holes in the muddy streets and made foot traffic very difficult.

Book Description
CHERISHED MEMORIES takes a memorable journey back to New Orleans of the 1950s. Professor Beverly Jacques Anderson shares stories from her childhood and from her elementary school classmates, providing a fascinating look at the experience of growing up in the Creole culture of the Seventh Ward of New Orleans. This culture indelibly shaped the character, personality, and aspirations of Anderson and her elementary school classmates, many of whom became hard working, family-oriented, serviceoriented, productive, self-assured citizens. Creole culture in the Seventh Ward was rooted in close family ties, hard work, creativity, high expectations, independence, the Golden Rule, Catholicism, shared language/manner of speaking, and a shared sense of belonging to a unique community. Teachers, parents, and principalsall African Americansvalued education and set high standards for student achievement. According to interviews with twelve of the authors classmates, these beliefs, along with the unwavering support of parents and teachers, helped to produce competitive individuals in all walks of life. The Creole culture was also rooted in racial, ethnic, and religious segregation that affected individuals in surprising ways. Anderson also examines the history of public and Catholic education for children of color in the Seventh Ward of New Orleans and addresses the impact of the school on the community and vice versa. Explore this fascinating community and its educational history with Cherished Memories.
