Oil and Natural Gas and accompanying Rules for Industry (2013), which were developed by the departments of Energy and Mines and The New Brunswick Commission on Hydraulic Environment and Local Government; and, Fracturing was appointed on March 24, 2015 • the creation of the New Brunswick Energy and was mandated by Premier Gallant to Institute (2013), which continues to commission study the issue of [...] To do that the Commission has residents it is coloured by their experiences with examined hydraulic fracturing using qualitative and the early promoters of shale gas, some of whom quantitative evidence from the natural sciences, were respectful and helpful, and some of whom social and health sciences, and the applied sciences were obnoxious and dismissive of concerns including engineering. [...] Sustainable Energy Group and the While the Commission limited its research and its Conservation Council of New Brunswick; inquiries to shale gas, it quickly became clear that the root causes of the shale gas impasse are directly • farmers, such as the Agricultural Alliance of related to the process for identifying, evaluating and New Brunswick; approving any resource development project. [...] When Mi'gmaq the capacity of people to purchase the goods and knowledge is researched by the Mi'gmaq services needed to live, such as housing, food and in a fulsome manner, it will provide precise clothing.17 We also rank last in the Conference and accurate evidence of Mi'gmaq use and Board's rankings on innovation, which includes occupancy of the land. Shale energy development is an issue of global importance. The number of reserves globally, and their potential economic return, have increased dramatically in the past decade. Questions abound, however, about the appropriate governance systems to manage the risks of unconventional oil and gas development and the ability for citizens to engage and participate in decisions regarding these systems. Stakeholder participation is essential for the social and political legitimacy of energy extraction and production, what the industry calls a 'social license' to operate. This book attempts to bring together critical themes inherent in the energy governance literature and illustrate them through cases in multiple countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, South Africa, Germany and Poland.
