Catecholamines 1922 -1971 H. BLASCHKO Adrenaline and related substances were discussed in the 1924 edition of Hefl'ter's Handbook by PAUL TRENDELENBURG. On 164 pages he described what was then known not only of adrenaline and its closest relatives but also of the sympathomimetic compounds such as tyramine and ephedrine. When the present Editors of the Handbook entrusted us with the task of editing the present Volume it was decided to restrict it to adrenaline and the other naturally occurring catecholamines. The sympathomimetic amines in general will be discussed only in their relation to the catecholamines. Since TRENDELENBURG completed his review this field has undergone an enormous expansion. This book aims to present a comprehensive classification of hypertensive phenotypes based on underlying target organ involvement. Particular emphasis is placed on review and assessment of clinical presentation, pathophysiologic mechanisms, and possible specific therapeutic options for each hypertension phenotype. Several of these phenotypes are well known and well described in the literature, such as prehypertension, white coat and masked hypertension, isolated systolic hypertension, renovascular hypertension, endocrine hypertension, pediatric hypertension, and gestational hypertension. Other hypertension phenotypes, however, are not widely recognized, being reported only in special reviews; examples include hypertension associated with renal calculus disease and other rarer causes such as Turner syndrome, herbal and medicinal compounds, and pharmacologic agents. A detailed account of the various causes of monogenic hypertension is also included. Finally, a section is devoted to general aspects of hypertension, including the significance of blood pressure indices, the natural course of untreated and treated hypertension, hypertension mechanisms, genetics, and guidelines for blood pressure control.

This book presents the papers that were delivered at the Satellite Symposium of the International Society for Neurochemistry in Padua, September, 1975. Having such Satellite Symposia was a new experiment for the Society, and all signs, including those from Padua, indicate that it was a very successful experiment, which will be an old tradition for the Society. The large international meeting affords the opportunity for presentations from all areas, for meeting of colleagues from various backgrounds and disciplines. The Satellite Symposia allow people from the same area of interest to discuss their subject in depth, and as such represent meetings of possibly the greatest practical significance for the partici pants. The Padua Symposium was no exception: all who particiDated in it could testify to its success in exchanging of information, learning of new approaches, and acqu~r~ng of new ideas, also the strengthening of old friendships, forming of new friendships and new collaborations, and exposing ideas to criticisms, suggestions, discussions. As a sign of the interest and success of the partici pants I can mention that all participants have sent in their contributions. Perhaps editors of volumes would anpreciate that the very last came in no later than two months past the deadline.
