Laffler Interest aroused in the past by Neusiedlersee, located in what was earlier the western part of Hungary, was mainly due to the enormous fluctuations in water level and the consequent threat to the livelihood of the local popula tion, who lived chiefly from stock-farming. Practically no tourism touched the area until 1920, about a century later than Schubert's visit to the Salzkam mergut lake district, the traditional resort area in Upper Austria. Probably because of its small popularity there is almost no documentation in the form of engravings or paintings. One of the exceptions is an oil painting by Schnorr-Carolsfeld, from about 1820. It is obvious that there was no Phragmites at the time he painted the view near Neusiedl. When the shallow Neusiedlersee was discovered by tourists it began to attract scientific interest, although some earlier work by mineralogists, geographers and hydrographers does exist. But it was only after the Second World War that this interest could be intensified, the lake now being an alkaline, turbid body of water confined by the vast areas of Phragmites which had come into existence after the lake last dried out in 1868. Scientific work gained considerable impetus from international activities such as the Interna tional Biological Programme, International Hydrological Decade, and Man and Biosphere, the results of which will be included in this volume. But in spite of all such efforts Neusiedlersee will undoubtedly remain, in many respects, a mystery.

The Symposium on Shallow Lakes, held from 23rd-30th, September 1979, at the Biological Research Station, IlImitz (Austria), was intended to give an insight into current European research on shallow lakes. The reason for the restriction to European participants was firstly to gather as much information as possible on investigations in one geographic area, and secondly the limited time and space available. Since shallow lakes pose a number of problems specifically related to their depth, several symposia have been devoted to this subject. Meetings like the Symposium on the Limnology of Shallow Waters in Tihany (Hungary), in 1973 and the Symposium 'Flachseeforschung' in Steinhude (Fed. Rep. of Germany), in 1974 stressed the need for further communication amongst limnologists working in this field. Moreover several international projects, like the OECD-Eutrophication-Program and the MaB-Project, have included certain aspects of shallow lake limnology. It is hoped by the editors that the proceedings presented here will stimulate further research and a greater exchange of information in this field.

The nutrient dynamics and biological structure of shallow non-stratified lakes differ markedly from that of deep and stratified lakes: for example, the return of nutrients lost through sedimentation is faster and the potential importance of fish and submerged macrophytes as food-web regulators is greater. In addition shallow lakes are more easily influenced by fluctuations in the physical environment caused by wind disturbance, temperature change, etc. Although shallow lakes are often the most common lake type in lowland countries, less attention has been paid to them than to deep stratified lakes and few comparisons have been made between shallow freshwater and brackish lakes. The volume is divided into five main themes, each introduced by an invited speaker: Nutrient dynamics with special emphasis on sediment water interactions and changes in loading (Professor Lambertus Lyklema); Biological structure and trophic interaction (Professor Stephen T. Threlkeld); Submerged macrophytes: dynamics and role in the lake ecosystems (Ass. The ecology of potamoplankton has received less attention than lake plankton. These proceedings produce a synthesis of the composition, community structure and dynamics of lotic phytoplankton, which are intuitively submitted to a strong physical control in the flowing environment, perceived as much more `disturbed' than a lake, even than a well-mixed shallow one. It turns out that the boundary between the phytoplankton of rivers and lakes is not as clear-cut as was thought. In particular, most contributions provide arguments emphasizing the prominent role of physical control in both aquatic systems, especially due to the steep light gradient resulting from turbulent mixing in a turbid water column. Similarities and differences between potamoplankton and limnoplankton, largely based on the information gathered by the contributors are discussed in the introductory paper by Reynolds et al.

The Fifth International Rotifer Symposium was organized by Dr. Claudia Ricci and held in the northern Italian town of Gargnano (Brescia) from September 12-17, 1988. Through the generosity of the Rector of Milano University, a beautiful villa on the shores of Lake Garda was made available to the 83 people from 20 countries who attended the symposium. Ten of these rotifer workers had attended the four previous meetings. Such symposia serve three major functions, the results of which will be apparent in the papers contained in this volume. First, because of the heterogeneity of interests and absence of concurrent sessions, the attendees are exposed to an unusually large variety of research problems, approaches and modes of interpretation. Bridges are thus built between one's own investigations and developments in the field as a whole. Second, the extensive informal interactions that occur outside of the meeting room during coffee breaks, dinners and excursions provide remarkable opportunities for research planning and sharing of results of work in progress. Third, the acquaintances established at these meetings have facilitated interactions during the three-year intervals between symposia. The result has been that visits between laboratories, acquisition of research materials from distant sources and coordination of related investi gations have all been greatly enhanced. A description of the week's events may serve to convey the ambience of the meeting.
