Senior students will use historical skills, including research, evaluation, synthesis, analysis and communication. Students will rely on their knowledge of the historical concepts such as evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, significance, empathy, perspectives and contestability, to understand and interpret societies from the past. The activities and tasks have been written to ensure that students develop the skills and attributes required for senior History subjects. This study of the United States of America from the early 20th century to the end of World War II explores a variety of themes using a rich range of primary visual and text sources and recent historiography. Included in the text are detailed considerations of American capitalism, social and cultural developments in literature and the arts, race relations and the experience of the 'Jazz Age', the Great Depression, and the impact of war.

GERMANY 1918-1948 has been developed especially for senior secondary students of History and is part of the Nelson Modern History series. Each book in the series is based on the understanding that History is an interpretive study of the past by which you also come to better appreciate the making of the modern world. The Stahlhelm (steel helmet) was introduced to the German Army in early 1916 as a protective helmet. Replacing earlier cloth and leather headgear such as the Pickelhaube, the Stahlhelm has become a potent symbol of German militarism in the first half of the 20th century. During the 1920s the right-wing veteran's organisation, Der Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten, which became the paramilitary wing of the German National People's Party and was later absorbed into the SA, used the helmet as both its name and symbol. With the establishment of the Third Reich, the Stahlhelm continued to be used by the German Wehrmacht but it was also used by the Schutzstaffel, the SS, as shown here in a photograph taken at the Nuremberg Party rally in 1938. Developing understandings of the past and present in senior History extends on the skills you learnt in earlier years. As senior students you will use historical skills, including research, evaluation, synthesis, analysis and communication, and the historical concepts, such as evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, significance, empathy, perspectives and contestability, to understand and interpret societies from the past. The development and application of steam power was one of many technical developments that drove the Industrial Revolution. The most significant modifications to the steam engine, which had first been patented in 1698, have been attributed to James Watt. Watt developed two important changes to these earlier models: the addition of a condenser and a 'rotative' system that used a crank rather than a chain to transfer power. These improvements greatly improved the efficiency and power of the steam engine and led to a range of new uses. By 1800, Watt's innovations were being used throughout the mining and textile industries in Britain. In the 1820s others, such as the father-and-son team of George and Robert Stephenson, applied the principles of steam power to transport, laying the foundation for the train mania of the 1840s.

CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE USA has been developed especially for senior secondary students of History and is part of the Nelson Modern History series. Each book in the series is based on the understanding that History is an interpretive study of the past by which you also come to better appreciate the making of the modern world. In many of the southern states of the United States of America, buses were divided so that white passengers sat at the front and black passengers sat at the back. When the white sections were full, black passengers were expected to give up their seats for white passengers. Black passengers paid at the front of the bus, but had to enter at the back, no matter what the weather. White bus drivers could, without explanation, eject black passengers from buses. In Montgomery, Alabama, on 1 December 1955, Rosa Parks, a 42-year-old seamstress, refused to give up her seat to a standing white man. Parks was arrested at the next stop for disobeying the municipal rule of compulsory segregation on buses. Parks' individual act triggered one of the most successful campaigns of the Civil Rights movement in the United States. In 1891 a petition calling for women to have equal voting rights with men was presented to the parliament of Victoria. Named the Monster Petition because of its size, it included signatures of approximately 30 000 women and was roughly 260 metres long. The signatures were gathered by members of the Victorian Christian Temperance Union and the Australian Women's Suffrage Society. While Victorian women did not get the vote until 1908, the petition is an important reminder of the campaigns for women's suffrage. The Monster Petition is now held by the Public Record Office Victoria. Petitions were also used by the women's suffrage movements in other Australian colonies, New Zealand, the United States and Great Britain.
