Neither Mischievous Nor Meddlesome
Author: Trisha Fielding
Publisher: North Queensland History Press
ISBN: 9780648483915
Category :
Languages : en
Pages :
Book Description
This is the fascinating story of a group of North Queensland women who tirelessly devoted their lives to the service of others, but have largely been forgotten by the communities in which they lived and worked. Even though doctors thought many midwives were mischievous and meddlesome, and actively sought to eradicate them, it was women who dominated in the provision of midwifery services in the North. It was midwives who built and operated private general hospitals and conducted lying-in hospitals from their own homes, all before the advent of government-funded maternity hospitals. This book examines the courageous lives of the women who quietly went about their duties with dignity and grace, though they were often faced with the same challenges as their patients - the perils of childbirth, loneliness and isolation, and frequent tragedy.

The Essays Or Counsels, Civil and Moral
Author: Francis Bacon
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 9780192838025
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 276
Book Description
'their excellence and their value consisted in being the observations of a strong mind operating upon life; and in consequence you find what you seldom find in other books.' Samuel Johnson Celebrated today as a writer and scientist, Francis Bacon was for the most part of his life occupied with the law and public affairs at a high level. Although personally devastating, his fall from public office in 1621 nonetheless served to liberate him for his own work and the last five years ofhis life saw an enormous output in the most varied fields. It is to this period that we owe the last and most popular work published in his lifetime, the Essays or Counsels, Civil and Moral (1625) Focusing on the ethical, political and historical constraints and influences on human behaviour andfollowing principles laid down by rhetorical theory, Bacon sought to systematize his observations on such diverse topics as beauty, deformity, fortune, adversity, ambition, friendship, truth, marriage, atheism and superstition. Persuasive and diagnostic, his Essays are valued for many reasons, notleast their combination of a dispassionate observation of human life with powerfully expressed moral judgements. This edition is based on the Oxford Authors series complete with notes on Bacon's rich vocabulary and substantial annotation.

Thanks to its stature as the premier city of North Queensland, from as early as 1895 Townsville was known as the "Queen City of the North". This book is a leisurely stroll through some of the fascinating aspects of the Queen City's history since its settlement in 1864 as a port for the region's pastoral industry. From tragic tales such as the disappearance of the last lighthouse keeper at Bay Rock, the sinking of the SS Yongala, shark attacks in Ross Creek, and the destruction caused by floods and cyclones; to gun battles in the city streets over workers' rights, the bombing of the city during World War II, and a cast of colourful characters that shaped the city's fortunes; this book presents a remarkably vivid picture of life in early Townsville that will delight history lovers.

Not illustrated. 1873 edition. Excerpt: ...to convince us, as similar principles did Humboldt, that we grasp principles of sublime simplicity and certainty. Those who accept the proportional theory of education, may perhaps, for some time yet be ridiculed as doctrinaires, but as no one can expect to be practically useful unless he first be theoretically correct, we must still cogitate and await the verdict of the future. The title proportionate or symmetrical may be too general for the apprehension of the ordinary reader; we must, therefore, descend further into exposition and detail, but before doing this, we would direct the reader's attention to that portion of our essay which demonstrated that human nature, mental and physical, is plastic and modifiable: this was a necessary preliminary, for if human nature were not plastic, it would be in vain to attempt the regeneration of mankind. All schemes for improving the moral, intellectual, or physical status of mankind are framed upon the tacit conviction that human, like other nature, is modifiable; divertible from, and convertible to the highest type of well-being. Education, then, is essentially a formative art; as essentially so as the plastic arts, commonly so called, and though its STRENGTHEN THE WEAKER FACULTIES 51 finished work may require a much longer period to accomplish than the painter or sculptor's, it will, when it shall be invested with full powers and in the plenitude of its mastery, be able to develop whatever manner of man it wills. It will be by this time fully evident that, in accordance with our primary confession, we have been driving full tilt against the vulgar error, that cultivating and still further exaggerating ' the iiatttral bias, ' as it is termed, is the true mode of educating. Only attempt to carry out this...
