"The Federal Highway Administration initiated this contract with the objective to crash test and evaluate several terminals, transitions, and longitudinal barriers to NCHRP Report 350. NCHRP Report 350 specifies crash tests and evaluation criteria for three performance levels for terminals and six performance levels for transitions and longitudinal barriers. The buried-in-backslope terminals evaluated were the G4 on steel posts and wood blockouts with a rub rail and a 6 to 1 vee ditch and the G4 with steel posts and wood blockouts with a 4 to 1 slope. Both met specifications for NCHRP Report 350 test 3-35. The 3-strand New York cable terminal was evaluated and met requirements for NCHRP Report 350 test 3-34. The transitions evaluated under this contract included the vertical wall transition (W-beam with W-beam rub rail and steel posts), the vertical flared back transition (W-beam with channel rub rail, steel posts, and routed wood blockouts), the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (DOT) transition (vertical flared back concrete parapet with W-beam, rub rail, steel posts, and routed wood blockouts), the Nebraska thrie beam transition (vertical wall parapet with thrie beam), and the Connecticut W-beam transition (NJ-shape wall with W-beam and channel rub rail). All the transitions met the required criteria for NCHRP Report 350 test 3-21, except for the vertical flared back transition. The MB1 median cable barrier chosen for evaluation was the Washington State DOT (WSDOT) cable barrier with a New York cable rail terminal. The thrie beam guardrail with steel posts and routed wood blockouts and the strong wood post thrie beam guardrail were also evaluated. The cable barrier and both thrie beam guardrails met the required specifications for NCHRP Report 350 test 3-11. The modified thrie beam guardrail with 2.1-m-long W150x14 steel posts and W360x33 blockouts (Design No. SGR09b) was evaluated and met specifications for NCHRP Report 350 test 4-12. Construction details for all the terminals, transitions, and longitudinal barriers evaluated are reported herein. This report contains the results of a crash test performed on the 1.07-m vertical wall bridge railing with a 36000V test vehicle under NCHRP Report 350 test level 5 conditions, i.e., impacting the length of need at a nominal speed and angle of 80 km/h and 15 degrees. The purpose of the test was to determine if the bridge railing would perform satisfactorily in containing and redirecting the heavy vehicle without rolling the vehicle.

The existing Montana Department of Transportation (DOT) concrete median barrier sections are 3.048 m (10 ft) long New Jersey shaped barriers with a pin-and-loop connection. Two pairs of 25 mm (1 in.) diameter wire rope loops are connected using a 660 mm (26 in.) long, 25 mm (1 in.) diameter pin that is not restrained at the bottom. Since the system has a low probability of complying with the NCHRP Report 350 guidelines, and the expected dynamic barrier deflection under design impact conditions is greater than desired by Montana DOT, two alternate barrier connection concepts were proposed and evaluated using computer simulations. These included a modified pin-and-loop connection and a newly conceived lapped splice connection. After these two designs appeared to perform acceptably during simulation, the proposed designs were constructed for full-scale crash testing to determine whether the designs would actually meet NCHRP Report 350 crash test criteria. This report presents the details of the simulation analysis, the details of the proposed barrier designs, the details of the full-scale crash tests, and the NCHRP Report 350 evaluation of each of the tests. Both the modified pin-and-loop barrier and the lapped splice connection barrier performed acceptably for NCHRP Report 350 test 3-11.

The New Jersey safety shaped barrier is one of the most common barriers currently in use on the Nation's highways. The barrier has successfully met all evaluation criteria set forth in National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 230. However, with the adoption of NCHRP Report 350 by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) as the official guidelines for crash testing of roadside safety features, it became necessary to reevaluate the New Jersey safety shaped barrier to the new guidelines. Of particular importance is the replacement of one of the design test vehicles specified in NCHRP Report 230, the 2044-kg passenger car, by a 2000-kg pickup truck (2000P) under NCHRP Report 350 guidelines. The crash test reported herein was performed as an effort to evaluate the New Jersey safety shaped barrier according to NCHRP Report 350 guidelines. The crash test performed corresponded to NCHRP Report 350 test designation 3-11 involving a 2000P test vehicle impacting the barrier at a nominal speed and angle of 100 km/h and 25 degrees. The New Jersey safety shaped barrier met all evaluation criteria set forth in NCHRP Report 350 and the test was judged to be satisfactory.
