Book Description
Excerpt from Appendix to the Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage: And of a Residence in the Arctic Regions During the Years 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833; Including the Reports of Commander, Now Captain, James Clark Ross, R. N., F. R. S., F. L. S., &C., And the Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole The narrative of my late voyage in search of a north-west passage, having been increased in its length far beyond my expectations, it became necessary to reserve for the Appendix every thing which did not actually belong to the work itself. I have to regret, therefore, that matter of much importance to myself has consequently been postponed; among which I may mention the two following letters, which having been already published in the newspapers, for the purpose of showing to the public that I was not ungrateful for the sympathy so universally manifested towards me and my companions. I had, indeed, deemed them an unnecessary addition to the narrative itself, but certainly not without the intention of again gratifying my feelings by publishing them, and some others, a second time, in justice to myself and to those whose humane endeavours cannot be too often or too fully acknowledged. Book Description
This book is a first-hand account of an expedition to find the North-West Passage in the 19th century, written by the expedition leaders themselves. The Rosses recount their encounters with inhospitable weather, native peoples, and even polar bears, all while maintaining scientific observations and charting unexplored territory. Adding to the intrigue is their search for Sir John Franklin, whose own expedition had disappeared in the same region only a few years prior. This book is a fascinating historical document and a thrilling account of adventure in a harsh and unfamiliar environment. Book Description
Excerpt from Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage, and of a Residence in the Arctic Regions During the Years 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833: Including the Reports of Commander, Now Captain, James Clark Ross, R. N., F. R. S., F. L. S., &C. And the Discovery of the Northern Magnetic Pole I have thought it best, therefore, to refer to Purchas, Harris, Churchill, Barrington, to works in many hands, and always easy of access, but above all to Barrow's Chrono logical History, published in 1818, for such fuller information as I might have extracted from those writers, had I thought it expedient. Yet not willing to leave entirely in the dark on this subject, those to whom such reading may be neither familiar nor acces sible, I will here give a condensed list sufficient for such a general purpose, from the writers above named. It will thus be the easier for those who are desirous of extend ing their knowledge of this question, to refer to any author or any voyage which they may fancy; though I imagine that Barrow's sketch will be sufficient to satisfy most readers.
