David Malick applies the hermeneutics of narrative analysis to select passages involving women in the Gospels of Mark, Luke, John, and in the Book of Acts. At times, the scope of this analysis extends beyond heightened understanding of how authors presented women as significant characters, and even foils to men, in the narratives. The use of duality and balance in the narratives of Zacharias and Mary, Nicodemus and the Samaritan Woman, and Aeneas, Tabatha, and Cornelius focus on what the author is doing with what he is saying. The use of intercalations, or sandwich stories, brings about heightened meaning when the stories of Jesus' mother and the religious leaders, or Jairus and the woman with a hemorrhage, or Judas and the woman who anoints Jesus for his burial, are read together in Mark. A first and subsequent reading of the healing of Simon's mother-in-law in Mark provides the reader with the first picture of true discipleship. The literary technique of a sign-sermon shows logical unity to what might be considered separate units in Mark and Acts.

"Through the gospels, and in particular through Luke's gospel and Acts, we can see the rise of a new kingdom and a new community that equally includes all -- rich and poor, Jews and Gentiles, masters and slaves, men and women. Luke paints this picture throughout his gospel and portrays how women were both affected by and given a role to play in the coming of the kingdom. For my project I chose three texts in the gospel of Luke that mirror the inclusion of women in the story of the in-breaking of the kingdom. The three texts reflect the progression of the story in the gospel of Luke and Christ's life on earth: the beginning (The Annunciation, Luke 1:26-38), the middle (Christ in the House of Mary and Martha, Luke 10:38-41), and the end of the gospel narrative (the three women at the tomb, Luke 24:1-8). Furthermore, these passages were chosen because of the presentation of the narrative: each of the passages has a male pairing (Luke 1:5-25; 10:25-37; 24:9-12), which is a typical feature of Luke; and each of the passages has only a few protagonists, which unites the visual presentation. There have been many studies of the women in the Gospels, but this is a new kind of book on the subject. Rather than offering a general overview of the Gospel women or focusing on a single theme, Richard Bauckham studies in great depth both the individual women who appear in the Gospels and the specific passages in which they appear. This unique approach reveals that there is much more to be known about such women than previous studies have assumed. Employing historical and literary readings of the biblical texts, Bauckham successfully captures the particularity of each woman he studies. An opening look at the Old Testament book of Ruth introduces the possibilities of reading Scripture from a woman's perspective.
