Excerpt from Myths and Folk-Lore of Ireland Any one who reads the myth tales contained in this volume will find that they are well preserved. At first thought it may seem quite wonderful that tales of this kind should be found in such condi tion while the whole body of tales are passing away so rapidly; on examination, however, this will appear not only reasonable, but as the inevi table outcome Of the political and social condition Of the people. Book Description
First written down in the eighth century AD, these early Irish stories depict a far older world - part myth, part legend and part history. Rich with magic and achingly beautiful, they speak of a land of heroic battles, intense love and warrior ideals, in which the otherworld is explored and men mingle freely with the gods. From the vivid adventures of the great Celtic hero Cu Chulaind, to the stunning 'Exile of the Sons of Uisliu' - a tale of treachery, honour and romance - these are masterpieces of passion and vitality, and form the foundation for the Irish literary tradition: a mythic legacy that was a powerful influence on the work of Yeats, Synge and Joyce.

Book Description
Excerpt from Folk-Lore and Legends: Ireland The stories have yet to be discovered which can compete with folk-lore stories in fascination for the young, and the reason for this it is not hard to divine. The folk-lore tale has had its origin among plain, artless people, in many respects only grown up children, and its survival to our times is simply evidence of these people having regarded it as being too excellent for them to allow it to be lost. Book Description
Excerpt from Legends and Stories Ireland Though the sources whence these stories are derived are open to every one, yet chance or choice may prevent thousands from making such sources available; and though the village crone and mountain guide have many hearers, still their circle is so circumscribed, that most of what I have ventured to lay before my readers, is, for the first time, made tangible to the greater portion of those who do me the favour to become such. In one story alone - "Paddy the Piper" - I have no claim to authorship, and this I take the earliest opportunity of declaring, and as I have entered upon my confessions, it is, perhaps, equally fair to state that although most of the tales are authentic, there is one purely my invention, namely, "The Gridiron." Book Description
Excerpt from The Medical Mythology of IrelandThese practitioners have their specialties, and one who deals with the evil eye will have nothing to do with a fairy sickness, neither will the fairy woman meddle with an illness which is due to the influence of the evil eye. It must not be supposed. However, that the people depend entirely upon the skill of these doctors. On the contrary, every house keeper is well acquainted with the virtues of all the common herbs, to which she never fails to resort in case of need - always accompanying the application with a prayer - and it is only when she has exhausted her resources or is convinced that the sickness is of supernatural origin. That she applies to the wideac' Zuib'o. When an ailment does not yield readily to simple treatment, it is generally ascribed to one of three causes, viz., the fairies, the evil eye, or witchcraft. The last of these is not often held responsible, as Irish witches usually confine their operations to stealing the butter, and seldom harm the owners. We will speak first of the fairies.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
