The Boundaries of Ethnicity
Author: Benjamin Bryce
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0228014891
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 175
Book Description
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, European settlers from diverse backgrounds transformed Ontario. By 1881, German speakers made up almost ten per cent of the province’s population and the German language was spoken in businesses, public schools, churches, and homes. German speakers in Ontario – children, parents, teachers, and religious groups – used their everyday practices and community institutions to claim a space for bilingualism and religious diversity within Canadian society. In The Boundaries of Ethnicity Benjamin Bryce considers what it meant to be German in Ontario between 1880 and 1930. He explores how the children of immigrants acquired and negotiated the German language and how religious communities relied on language to reinforce social networks. For the Germans who make up the core of this study, the distinction between insiders and outsiders was often unclear. Boundaries were crossed as often as they were respected. German ethnicity in this period was fluid, and increasingly interventionist government policies and the dynamics of generational change also shaped the boundaries of ethnicity. German speakers, together with immigrants from other countries and Canadians of different ethnic backgrounds, created a framework that defined relationships between the state, the public sphere, ethnic spaces, family, and religion in Canada that would persist through the twentieth century. The Boundaries of Ethnicity uncovers some of the origins of Canadian multiculturalism and government attempts to manage this diversity.

Narrative Development in a Multilingual Context
Author: Ludo Th Verhoeven
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9789027241344
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 448
Book Description
In this volume, the results of a number of empirical studies of the development of narrative construction within a multilingual context are presented and discussed. It is explored what operating principles underlie the process of narrative production in L1 and L2. Developmental relations between form and function will be studied across a broad range of functional categories, such as temporality, perspective, connectivity, and narrative coherence. Moreover, a variety of language contact situations is considered with broad variation in the typological distances between the languages in order to enable cross-linguistic comparison. The analysis of learner data in various cross-linguistic settings may thus offer new information on the role of the structural properties of unrelated languages on the process of narrative acquisition. In the present volume, an attempt is also made to find out how transfer from one language to the other is facilitated. Finally, the effects of input on narrative construction in children's first and second language are examined in several studies.

The Genealogy of Morals
Author: Friedrich Nietzsche
Publisher: Livraria Press
ISBN: 3989886487
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 164
Book Description
A new translation into American English from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1887 "Zur Genealogie der Moral" or "On the Genealogy of Morals". This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 8 in the Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche by Livraria Press. In tracing the origins of morality, the ruthless philosopher-artist surveys all of human history from a Darwinian-historical perspective first, and then from a phenomenological lens. He does not have the Teleological view of history of Hegel, but rather sees a broken mess of repression and mistakes leading to the modern world, which must all be broken down. His great work is to help society return to a pre-socratic greek warrior society. This and his following works Beyond Good and Evil and The Twilight of the Idols are “the books of the revaluation of all values”.
