The Franchise Affair (Musaicum Vintage Mysteries)
Author: Josephine Tey
Publisher: DigiCat
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
Robert Blair, a local solicitor, is called on to defend two women, Marion Sharpe and her mother, who are accused of kidnapping and beating a fifteen-year-old Betty Kane. As the Sharpes are about to be interviewed by local police and Scotland Yard, represented by Inspector Alan Grant, Marion calls Blair and, although his firm does not do criminal cases, he agrees to come out to their home, "The Franchise", to look out for their interests during the questioning. The case against them is quite strong. The Sharpe women are accused that one night they approached Betty while she was waiting for a bus and offered her a lift. Then they allegedly took her to the Franchise, demanded that she become a domestic worker, and, upon her refusal, imprisoned her in the attic. Betty alleges that they starved and beat her until she escaped. As interest in the case builds over a few weeks, locals engage in overt hostility against the Sharpes: public snubbing, then graffiti on their walls, then smashing of the windows; the vandalism culminates when the Franchise is destroyed by arson. Blair slowly uncovers clue after clue in order to find holes in Betty's story, also pointing out her character flaws. But no matter how good of a job Blair does, case against Marion and her mother is strong and public pressure threatens to culminate.

The Al-Qaeda Franchise
Author: Barak Mendelsohn
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190205601
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
The al-Qaeda Franchise asks why al-Qaeda adopted a branching-out strategy, introducing seven franchises spread over the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. After all, transnational terrorist organizations can expand through other organizational strategies. Forming franchises was not an inevitable outgrowth of al-Qaeda's ideology or its U.S.-focused strategy. The efforts to create local franchises have also undermined one of al-Qaeda's primary achievements: the creation of a transnational entity based on religious, not national, affiliation. The book argues that al-Qaeda's branching out strategy was not a sign of strength, but instead a response to its decline in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. Franchising reflected an escalation of al-Qaeda's commitments in response to earlier strategic mistakes, leaders' hubris, and its diminished capabilities. Although the introduction of new branches helped al-Qaeda create a frightening image far beyond its actual capabilities, ultimately this strategy neither increased the al-Qaeda threat, nor enhanced the organization's political objectives. In fact, the rise of ISIS from an al-Qaeda branch to the dominant actor in the jihadi camp demonstrates how expansion actually incurred heavy costs for al-Qaeda. The al-Qaeda Franchise goes beyond explaining the adoption of a branching out strategy, also exploring particular expansion choices. Through nine case studies, it analyzes why al-Qaeda formed branches in some arenas but not others, and why its expansion in some locations, such as Yemen, took the form of in-house franchising (with branches run by al-Qaeda's own fighters), while other locations, such as Iraq and Somalia, involved merging with groups already operating in the target arena. It ends with an assessment of al-Qaeda's future in light of the turmoil in the Middle East, the ascendance of ISIS, and US foreign policy.

Ridgelands Franchise Execution
Author: Vic Lindblom
Publisher: The Writers Tree
ISBN: 1304595366
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
“Execution” is the third and final book in the Franchise series of the Ridgelands saga. In the previous books, “Preparation” and “Journey,” Belak Laboot brings a technical team to establish an iron-making franchise to BuelaVisu, a city across the continental divide from their home in Laboot City. Now they must execute the mission to establish production in BuelaVisu. Organizing and moving the team across the ridgelands unified the team in the face of outside attacks and personal friction. BuelaVisu’s advantages shine as residents buy into the project, hydropower is developed, and siting arrangements mature. The unrest, which soured the franchise’s introduction to the city, diminishes as leaders work around the resistance. Foundations, pilings, blasting, and resource development progress rapidly. People throughout BuelaVisu begin to experience opportunities from the project. Belak and his sister, Louise, grow and establish new ties in the team and community. Resistance regroups as progress threatens their control in Visu. Leadership in Laboot City realizes that reports hide issues arising, so they send an investigative team, which digs deeper into city dynamics and sets the stage for subversion. Belak stands against the conspiracy, getting deeper into politics that he intended. Violence and betrayals follow.

Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 204
Book Description
This book will detail and report the way of working of this wonderful world of business that thrives with much success, generating profit for the franchisor, for the supplier, for the franchisee and for Brazil. For those who want to create their own future, franchising is a great choice! Franchising in Brazil aims to contribute to many key issues in the process of democratization of information. With the system being in an increasing development, we intend to show that the panorama is accessible to all classes of the economically active country, providing opportunities for investors and individuals, seeking out to enter the labor market, but also for the academic public, researchers, journalists, economists, government agencies, and individuals, among others. Therefore, the creation of a work on the entire system in the form of a manual became imperative to present, in a dynamic and didactic way, how franchising can cause innovation in all economic sectors of the country, and showing that everyone has the possibility of investing in franchising and benefit from inside information generated in this sector. Enjoy your reading, and may the success be with you!
