This monograph presents the theory of nonconservative systems close to nonlinear integrable ones. With the example of concrete quasi-conservative systems close to nonintegrable ones, the results of numerical analysis are given, and the problem of applying the small parameter method is analyzed.The fundamantal part of the book deals with the investigation of the perturbable systems. Both autonomous and nonautonomous (periodic in time) systems are considered. The global analysis of systems close to the two-dimensional Hamiltonian ones takes a central place in the text. This global analysis includes the solution to problems such as the limit cycles, resonances, and nonregular dynamics. For the autonomous systems, one should note the analysis of the standard (Duffing and pendulum) equations including the solution to the “weakened” 16 Hilbert's problem, and for the nonautonomous systems one should note the mathematical foundations of the theory of synchronization of oscillations (the existence of new regimes, and the passage of invariant tori across the resonance zones under the change of detuning). This Research Note explores existence and multiplicity questions for periodic solutions of first order, non-convex Hamiltonian systems. It introduces a new Morse (index) theory that is easier to use, less technical, and more flexible than existing theories and features techniques and results that, until now, have appeared only in scattered journals. Morse Theory for Hamiltonian Systems provides a detailed description of the Maslov index, introduces the notion of relative Morse index, and describes the functional setup for the variational theory of Hamiltonian systems, including a new proof of the equivalence between the Hamiltonian and the Lagrangian index. A survey of current knowledge about Hamiltonian systems with three or more degrees of freedom and related topics. The Hamiltonian systems appearing in most of the applications are non-integrable. Hence methods to prove non-integrability results are presented and the different meaning attributed to non-integrability are discussed. For systems near an integrable one, it can be shown that, under suitable conditions, some parts of the integrable structure, most of the invariant tori, survive. Many of the papers discuss near-integrable systems. From a topological point of view, some singularities must appear in different problems, either caustics, geodesics, moving wavefronts, etc. This is also related to singularities in the projections of invariant objects, and can be used as a signature of these objects. Hyperbolic dynamics appear as a source on unpredictable behaviour and several mechanisms of hyperbolicity are presented. The destruction of tori leads to Aubrey-Mather objects, and this is touched on for a related class of systems. Examples without periodic orbits are constructed, against a classical conjecture. Other topics concern higher dimensional systems, either finite (networks and localised vibrations on them) or infinite, like the quasiperiodic Schrödinger operator or nonlinear hyperbolic PDE displaying quasiperiodic solutions. Most of the applications presented concern celestial mechanics problems, like the asteroid problem, the design of spacecraft orbits, and methods to compute periodic solutions.

FACHGEB The last decade has seen a tremendous development in critical point theory in infinite dimensional spaces and its application to nonlinear boundary value problems. In particular, striking results were obtained in the classical problem of periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems. This book provides a systematic presentation of the most basic tools of critical point theory: minimization, convex functions and Fenchel transform, dual least action principle, Ekeland variational principle, minimax methods, Lusternik- Schirelmann theory for Z2 and S1 symmetries, Morse theory for possibly degenerate critical points and non-degenerate critical manifolds. Each technique is illustrated by applications to the discussion of the existence, multiplicity, and bifurcation of the periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems. Among the treated questions are the periodic solutions with fixed period or fixed energy of autonomous systems, the existence of subharmonics in the non-autonomous case, the asymptotically linear Hamiltonian systems, free and forced superlinear problems. Application of those results to the equations of mechanical pendulum, to Josephson systems of solid state physics and to questions from celestial mechanics are given. We consider the problem of proving the existence of periodic solutions for a second order nonautonomous Hamiltonian system in n-dimensional Euclidean space. We assume the dynamic behavior is determined by a nonautonomous linear term and a nonautonomous gradient term which must be continuous and linearly bounded. By proving the existence of a critical point for a nonlinear functional acting on an appropriate function space we find conditions for the existence of weak solutions when neither the linear nor the nonlinear contribution to the dynamic behavior is dominant. We give conditions for the existence of a nontrivial solution. We consider the case where the dynamic behavior is determined only by the nonautonomous gradient term. We also give conditions for the existence of piecewise continuous and continuous solutions.
