Bureaucratizing Islam
Author: Ann Marie Wainscott
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108249035
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 287
Book Description
How have states in the Middle East and North Africa responded to the War on Terror? While much scholarship has focused on terrorism in the region, there is need for critical studies of Middle Eastern states' counter-terrorism policies. This book addresses that need by investigating Morocco's unique approach to counter-terrorism: the bureaucratization of religion. Morocco's strategy is unique in the degree to which it relies on reforms that seek to make the country's religious institutions into tools for rewarding loyalty and discouraging dissent from religious elites. Through these measures they have limited opposition through an enduring form of institutional control, accommodating some of the country's most virulent critics. This book will be of great use to researchers and scholars of Middle Eastern politics, and it will also appeal to those policymakers interested in security studies and counter-terrorism policies.

The "War on Terror" and Moroccan-American Relations

Book Description
One of the major purposes of my study is to extract the systematic features of the terrorist incidents of 9/11 and 5/16, and try to get the lessons. Knowing what happened on a given occasion is not sufficient by itself. If we make no effort to extract the systematic features of the subject; the lessons of history will be lost, and we will learn nothing about what aspects of our subject are likely to persist or to be relevant to future events or studies.

Beyond 'draining the Swamp'
Author: Stephen R. Dalzell
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Islamic fundamentalism
Languages : en

Book Description
Morocco's campaign against Islamic extremism merits study because of its importance for the global War on Terrorism and the apparent linkages between urban conditions and domestic terrorist groups. Using interviews, government documents from Morocco and the United States, and other published sources, this study sought to determine if and how the Moroccan strategy can serve as a model for other partners in the War on Terrorism. Analysis found that the Moroccan strategy offers an example of integrating socio- economic, ideological, political, and security-sector reforms, particularly in the growing sophistication of Moroccan efforts to eliminate informal housing areas and to increase the government's capacity in urban policing.

Morocco's Comprehensive Strategy Against Terrorism
Author: Othman Meziane
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Africa, North
Languages : en
Pages : 17
Book Description
"The Arab Spring protest movements in the Middle East and North Africa, ignited socio-political protests in the Kingdom of Morocco, threatening domestic stability. Morocco considers terrorism its greatest security concern. Extremists appeal to Moroccan nationals to commit attacks inside the country and abroad using sophisticated and high technology radicalization process. In addition, the ongoing chaos in the MENA region has increased terrorists' capability to recruit among Moroccans, as they seek to expand their activities inside the Kingdom. The perception of terrorism as a common dominator to MENA countries hinders economic growth in both Morocco and the region. Nevertheless, the Kingdom is still considered as a terror-free country, an exception in the region, thanks to its efficient and comprehensive counterterrorism program combining an efficient security strategy, a promising human development program, as well as a strict control of religious affairs. This paper covers not only the Moroccan government's use of force and material barriers, and its attention to the grievances of the unemployed and alienated youth, but also its programs to counter-act the ideology of radicals and terrorists. The discussion of the counter-radicalization campaign demonstrates the value of the Moroccan approach. This paper deserves recognition for its thorough consideration of the Moroccan counter-terrorism strategy. It acknowledges the past failures and continuing problems facing the Moroccan government."--Abstract.

Africa and the War on Terrorism
Author: John Davis
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317184505
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
Abject poverty and official corruption make parts of Africa a very attractive destination for terrorist organizations. Opportunities have developed during the pre- and post-9/11 periods in Africa for the recruitment of terrorists, attainment of bases of operations and sources of funding for Al Qaeda or its affiliated terror groups. This comprehensive volume provides an extensive examination of major terrorist events in Africa. It highlights internal and external indices to illustrate why Africa is so ripe for terrorism, ostensibly in terms of recruitment as well as attainment and sources of funding due to the continent's continuing poverty and corruption. The volume will prove indispensable reading for anyone researching security issues, political sociology and African studies.

Morocco and the Conflict in Western Sahara
Author: Daniel R. Cooper
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781628085570
Category : Civil war
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
At a crucial crossroads between Africa and Europe, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and the "Arab World" and the West, Morocco has long had a special place in U.S. diplomacy and strategic planning. Since the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, Morocco's importance to the United States has only risen, and the more recent uncertainties of the Arab Spring and Islamist extremism in Africa have further increased the strategic value and operational relevance of the Moroccan-American alliance. Yet, one of the pillars of the legitimacy of the Moroccan monarchy, its claim to Western Sahara, remains a point of violent contention. Since the Spanish withdrawal and subsequent occupation of the territory by Morocco in 1975, the United States has poured many millions of dollars in material, training, and intelligence into the Moroccan armed forces. But the latter has failed to inflict a decisive defeat on the Polisario Front, the Western Saharan organisation whose goal is full independence for Western Sahara. This book provides an historical analysis of the conflict in Western Sahara, stressing developments of relevance to the U.S. Army and to American and regional strategic interests since Morocco's independence in 1956.

Terrorism in the Maghreb
Author: Anneli Botha
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 260
Book Description
Terrorism on the African continent is a complex and emotional topic. One of the primary reasons for this is that a historical introspection for any country, or its people, that has been confronted with a conflicting past can only be described as 'sensitive'. In addition to international developments and challenges, domestic circumstances predominately fuel domestic terrorism. It will therefore be a mistake to assess the threat of terrorism in any country in historic isolation. This is particularly true when one tries to assess and understand the 'renewed' threat of terrorism in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. This monograph will attempt to place the threat and implication of the name change announcement of the Salafist Group for Combat and Preaching (GSPC) to al-Qa'eda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb (AQLIM) in context, with the primary focus on events in 2007. The name change in itself implied that the original domestic group had transnational ambitions, but what influenced this development and what would the consequences be? Although this development led to immediate and extensive international interest in the Maghreb, it became clear that most assessments focused on the now, without appreciating the historical complexities that ultimately led to this development.
