The advent of biotechnology has the potential to develop a variety of novel or better quality products for the treatment of a large number of diseases in livestock. In addition, as we understand more about the reproductive physiology of animals, the potential exists to dramatically increase the productivity of animals through better therapeutics and diagnostics for the control of many infectious diseases. Productivity can also be increased through animal breeding strategies including gene transfer, micromanipulation of embryos and gamete sex selection. As well as being a valuable reference to current knowledge in these areas, this first supplement to Comprehensive Biotechnology also looks at societal concerns over the use of antibiotics and chemical residues in meat and milk products, which are forcing biotechnologists to investigate more natural means of controlling infection by stimulating the animal's own immune system to combat infection. The identification of a variety of cytokines which are involved in regulating immune responses provides opportunities to use the animal's natural defence mechanisms to combat many infections or increase the animal's resistance to such infections. These approaches should provide tools for eventual elimination of specific diseases from counties, regions or whole continents.

The advent of hybridoma technology leading to the successful produc tion of monoclonal antibodies against a variety of tumor-associated antigens has, during the last decade, provided a very powerful tool for research and clinical investigations. These highly specific reagents have essentially replaced the polysera of the earlier days. The successful demonstration of the many wide ranging capabilities of the monoclonal antibody technique has already begun to exert an enormous impact on diverse areas of research in basic science and medicine. In particular, the potential of monoclonal antibodies to serve as carriers for selective targeting of radionuclides to tumors for diagnosis or therapy, has stimulated an intense surge of research interest and even revived hopes of realizing Ehrlich's concept of the "magic bullet". Indeed, the technology appears to be on the threshold of a revolution in diagnosing and treating malignant disease. Much work remains to be done, however, and even though the progress has been impressive, results to date have shown only moderate success. To scientists, oncology means research on the disease of cancer. The connection between basic research and clinical oncology, however, is not always very clear. Basic research sometimes appears to be an art that is practiced for its own sake and admired for its perfection. The clinician wishes to interpret the issues addressed by basic research, as he is eager to obtain answers to the questions that clinical oncology leaves open. These are, among others, questions as to the etiology and pathogenesis of neoplasma in human beings. In spite of all the technological advances during the past 10 years, the guidelines for new treatments of human leukemias and tumors are still unsatisfactory. The dialogue between researchers and clinicians must never cease, so that these questions can be formulated in such a way that science may be able to answer them. Both parties should cooperate whenever this is useful and possible. Prospectively planned clinical trials on the diagnosis and therapy of neoplasias offer a good opportunity for research involving patients. Tumor and/or blood tests run by reference laboratories on a great number of patients with the same diagnosis can lead to clinically relevant basic research. Using clinical studies in basic research programs permits us to trace missing pieces in the puzzle of cancer and put them into place.
