Book Description
Fish exhibit the greatest diversity of all vertebrates, making this group extremely attractive for the study of a number of evolutionary questions. Besides, fish genomes have intrinsic characteristics that may be responsible for this amazing diversity, but little is known about their structure and organization. Major advances in chromosomal studies were achieved in the current 'molecular cytogenetic era' based on detecting DNA sequences on chromosomes, parts of chromosomes or even whole genomic DNA by fluorescence in situ hybridization. In this issue, a collection of review articles is presented together with current research results, demonstrating the advances made using this specific methodology in fish research. The contributions provide a timely update on recent developments in fish molecular cytogenetics, covering topics such as karyotype evolution, sex and B chromosomes, polyploids, and molecular evolution. Researchers, teachers, and students interested in the structural features and evolutionary dynamics of fish genomes will find this publication a valuable source of current knowledge.

Book Description
This book is a unique source of information on the present state of the exciting field of molecular cytogenetics and how it can be applied in research and diagnostics. The basic techniques of fluorescence in situ hybridization and primed in situ hybridization (PRINS) are outlined, the multiple approaches and probe sets that are now available for these techniques are described, and applications of them are presented in 36 chapters by authors from ten different countries around the world. The book not only provides the reader with basic and background knowledge on the topic, but also gives detailed protocols that show how molecular cytogenetics is currently performed by specialists in this field. The FISH Application Guide initially provides an overview of the (historical) development of molecular cytogenetics, its basic procedures, the equipment required, and probe generation. The book then describes tips and tricks for making different tissues available for molecular cytogenetic studies. These are followed by chapters on various multicolor FISH probe sets, their availability, and their pot- tial for use in combination with other approaches. The possible applications that are shown encompass the characterization of marker chromosomes, cryptic cytogenetic aberrations and epigenetic changes in humans by interphase and metaphase cyto- netics, studies of nuclear architecture, as well as the application of molecular cytogenetics to zoology, botany and microbiology.

Book Description
Yao-Shan Fan and a panel of senior scientists and pioneering researchers describe in step-by-step style the leading FISH techniques and those molecular technologies beyond FISH available for diagnostic services in genetics and oncology. The methods include labeling FISH probes for DNA and RNA targets, fluorescence genotyping, CGH microarray, spectral karyotyping/multicolor FISH, and primed in situ labeling. There are also techniques for multicolor fiber FISH, multi-telomere FISH, prenatal diagnosis using maternal blood, and preimplantation diagnosis. Oncological methods include simultaneous fluorescence immunophenotyping and FISH for leukemia and lymphoma, HER2 amplification in breast cancer, and CAC/PAC for cancer cytogenetics.

Book Description
As the largest group of extant vertebrates, fish offer an almost limitless number of striking examples of evolutionary adaptation to environmental and biotic selection pressure. The most diverse of all vertebrate groups, the higher taxa of fish traditionally have been classified by morphology and paleontology, with a much smaller input of cytogenetic information. DNA sequence data are exerting an increasingly strong influence on modern fish systematics, challenging the classification of numerous higher taxa ranging from genera to orders. The most fruitful approach, however, involves synthetic analyses of morphology, molecular phylogenetics, comparative karyology, and genome size. Karyotypes of more than 3400 species/subspecies are arranged here by fish systematics and include a list of genome size, sex chromosomes, B chromosomes, polyploidy, and locality of material fish, among others. This volume enables both beginners and advanced researchers to survey the existing literature and facilitates the implementation of an integrative approach to fish systematics. The first book on fish chromosomes in nearly 15 years, it is also the most comprehensive.

Book Description
Cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and molecular tests, especially polymerase chain reaction (PCR), play an important role in the management of patients with hematologic malignancies by helping to establish the diagnosis, as well as predict prognosis, response to treatment and disease progression. Chromosomal and molecular abnormalities provide the most reliable criteria for classification of hematopoietic tumors and often comprise the basis for targeted therapy. Cytogenetics, FISH and Molecular Testing in Hematologic Malignancies, provides a review of chromosomal and molecular changes in hematologic malignancies and correlates the karyotypic and genetic abnormalities with morphology, immunophenotype and clinical data. With over 180 figures and diagnostic algorithms, this text is essential reading for all pathologists, hematopathologists, hematologic oncologists, cytogenetists, cytogenetic technologists and cell biologists.

Book Description
In the past 20 years, fish cytogenetics has become an essential tool in fields as diverse as systematics and evolution, conservation, aquaculture and more recently, genomics. This book is organized in four sections (systematics and evolution; biodiversity conservation; stock assessment and aquaculture; genomics) covering the major fields of present fish cytogenetic research. The eighteen contributions from thirteen countries which make up this book, provide a comprehensive picture of the ongoing research around the world. Due to the diversified arrays of themes approached, including speciation and evolution, biodiversity and conservation and genomics, the book is addressed not only to specialists in cytogenetics but to all scientists interested in fish biology.

Book Description
The new techniques of molecular cytogenetics, mainly fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) of DNA probes to metaphase chromosomes or interphase nuclei, have been developed in the past two decades. Many FISH techniques have been implemented for diagnostic services, whereas some others are mainly used for investigational purposes. Several hundreds of FISH probes and hybridization kits are now commercially available, and the list is growing rapidly. FISH has been widely used as a powerful diagnostic tool in many areas of medicine including pediatrics, medical genetics, maternal–fetal medicine, reproductive medicine, pathology, hematology, and oncology. Frequently, a physician may be puzzled by the variety of FISH techniques and wonder what test to order. It is not uncommon that a sample is referred to a laboratory for FISH without indicating a specific test. On the other hand, a cytogeneticist or a technologist in a laboratory needs, from case to case, to determine which procedure to perform and which probe to use for an informative result. To obtain the best results, one must use the right DNA probes and have reliable protocols and measures of quality assurance in place. Also, one must have sufficient knowledge in both traditional and molecular cytogenetics, as well as the particular areas of medicine for which the test is used in order to appropriately interpret the FISH results, and to correlate them with clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis.

Book Description
Cytogenetics - Past, Present, and Further Perspectives discusses events that influenced the development of cytogenetics as a specialty within biology, with special attention paid to methodological achievements developed worldwide that have driven the field forward. Improvements to the resolution of chromosome analysis followed closely the introduction of innovative analytical technologies. In that sense, this book reviews and provides a brief account of the structure of chromosomes and stresses the high structural conservation in different species with an emphasis on aspects that require further research. However, it should be kept in mind that the future of cytogenetics will likely depend on improved knowledge of chromosome structure and function.
