When we survey French Art, for example, from the days of Gros and David to those of Manet, Monet and Degas, or American Art from the days of Copley, West and Stuart to those of Abbey, Whistler and Sargent, the field is indeed crowded with figures. It would be interesting to wander into Russia, Austria, Hungary, Scandinavia, Italy and Spain and exhibit what the artists of the Nineteenth Century have done and what of their work is individual and what has been inspired by the Spirit of the Age. Space, however, insists that we hang here only some of the most striking and famous pictures of the century that has just drawn to a close, and represent only painters who have enjoyed the greatest vogue, who have been founders of schools, or who are ever growing in popular estimation, like Alfred Stevens, for example. Book Description
Excerpt from Modern Painting The Ten o'clock contained a good deal of brilliant writing, sparkling and audacious epigram, but amid all its glitter and go there are statements which, coming from Mr. Whistler, are as astonishing as a denial of the rotundity of the earth would be in a pamphlet bearing the name of Professor Huxley. Mr. Whistler is only serious in his art a grave fault according to academicians, who are serious in everything except their art. A very boyish utterance is the statement that such a thing as an artistic period has never been known. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Modern Italian Art IN writing this book I trust that I have not taken a wholly one-sided view of my subject. I certainly have not been conscious of any wish either to de monstrate that the art-work of the period under con sideration was wholly good or that it was wholly bad. At the beginning I shared the feeling which we all have to some extent, that modern Italian art was degenerate, far removed in its standards and in its results from the art of the best period; but much study of the subject has led me to alter that view very materially. No one could have followed my line of work, step by step, without becoming convinced that the common feeling, to which I have alluded, was based to a certain extent upon prejudice and lack of information, and that a more generous attitude ought to be taken toward the men who, in the face of many discouragements, have so bravely struggled to redeem the art of the peninsula from the reproach which has been cast upon it. Book Description
Excerpt from Études in Modern French Art Go see the drawings by Raphael in the Louvre; see how he attaches his figure together at the knees and shoulders and hips; how careful he is to insist on this continuity of the form; how every bone hangs by a string to some other bone; and how careful he is to express this dragging and weight of the form. I have never seen a drawing by Gerome which did not insist on the same quality of nature. He may violently bend the joint of a figure, but what he insists on is the flow of it, not the break of it. This continuity is one of the great traits of a figure by Gerome; another is, that when the conditions of the picture do not give a chance to tell all the facts about a figure, and when some have to be expressed and others omitted, he expresses the facts of the mechanism of the human frame, so that the figure, however slight, is a viable machine. He has sometimes shown a peculiar reticence in stating the facts about a figure, reducing it to its necessary parts; these slighted or subordinate figures remind me strangely of Egyptian images, and have something of the same dignity; an Egyptian figure always seems to say that the artist was capable of expressing more if he chose, but preferred to hold his tongue; the facts of anatomy seem to be all there, only enclosed in a sort of envelope; and the figure is sure to be not a bundle of limbs, but an unity, depending upon itself from head to foot. This summary treatment, perhaps inspired by his love for Egyptian art, is successfully practiced alone by Gerome among modern painters.
