Book Description
In Supernatural Entertainments, Simone Natale vividly depicts spiritualism’s rise as a religious and cultural phenomenon and explores its strong connection to the growth of the media entertainment industry in the nineteenth century. He frames the spiritualist movement as part of a new commodity culture that changed how public entertainments were produced and consumed. Starting with the story of the Fox sisters, considered the first spiritualist mediums in history, Natale follows the trajectory of spiritualism in Great Britain and the United States from its foundation in 1848 to the beginning of the twentieth century. He demonstrates that spiritualist mediums and leaders adopted many of the promotional strategies and spectacular techniques that were being developed for the broader entertainment industry. Spiritualist mediums were indistinguishable from other professional performers, as they had managers and agents, advertised in the press, and used spectacularism to draw audiences. Addressing the overlap between spiritualism’s explosion and nineteenth-century show business, Natale provides an archaeology of how the supernatural became a powerful force in the media and popular culture of today.

Excerpt from V. C. Annual Entertainment: April 17, 1931 The word has perhaps parted with some of the attraction which a less modern age lent to it, but it still remains the ideal of a well - balanced educa tion. Gentlemen are to be met with today, and will be as long as there is left in the heart of man a longing for the ideals which God has planted therein. The better things, the only lasting things amid the rush and bustle of men, will never fade entirely from the earth. Book Description
Philosophers have discussed art – or artistic practices such as poetry – since ancient times. But systems of art and entertainment appeared only in the modern era – in the West, during the 18th and 19th centuries. And philosophers have largely neglected the concept of entertainment. In this book Andy Hamilton explores art and entertainment from a philosophical standpoint. He argues, against modernist theory, that art and entertainment are not opposites, but form a loosely connected conceptual system. Against postmodernism, however, he insists on their vital differences. Hamilton begins by questioning the received modernist view, examining artist-entertainers including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday. Entertainment, he argues, is by nature audience-centred – but so is art, in a different way. Thus while art should pass the test of time, entertainment must pass the test of its own time – it has to entertain at the time it is produced. Art and entertainment are inter-dependent concepts, and must be understood together with other aesthetic concepts including criticism, genius, canons and design. These concepts form the subject of later chapters of this book, where Hamilton develops a meritocratic position that is neither elitist nor populist. He also addresses the contemporary charge of cultural appropriation, and qualifies it. An innovative feature of the book is the inclusion of dialogues with artists, critics and academics that help to recast or reformulate the debate. Art and Entertainment: A Philosophical Exploration is essential reading for those working in art and aesthetics, and will also be of interest to those in related disciplines such as cultural studies, music and film studies, with an interest in entertainment.

Book Description
The Little Boss A Comedy Drama in Four Acts is an engaging, thought provoking, and entirely entertaining play written by Frank L. Bixby. This play offers an historic glimpse at America during a period of racial strife, economic turmoil, and social changes that affected families both humorously and dramatically. Bixby's take on the American experience is at times true to the experience of the "every man" and at other times made more humorous or dramatic for entertainment purposes. An interesting read for modern playwrights and theater scholars, Bixby's play presents a historic look at play writing, story, the use of drama and comedy, and character development. For historians, Bixby's play also holds some interesting insight into American dialects, societal beliefs and major social issues of specific time periods, and typified groups often seen characterized in classic literature. Bixby's play can also be used as a guide for the modern playwright on what comedy works and what comedy does not work in the present-day theater. At times, Bixby almost goes too far to demonstrate negative qualities about certain groups or types of individuals, and while applicable to a certain time frame in American history, some of these characters could easily be considered offensive by modern readers. The Little Boss A Comedy Drama in Four Acts offers a glimpse into historic America with all the drama and comedy it has to offer. Bixby's play stands out as both an entertaining read and a guide for current and future playwrights on what works and what does not work in theatrical literature. This book is an interesting read for individuals who enjoy plays, the theater, and American societal history.
