Models of the Trapped Radiation Environment. Volume III - Electrons at Synchronous Altitudes

Book Description
A program sponsored jointly by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the United States Air Force has been in progress to define a model of the radiation environment of the earth. Of special interest to space systems planners and spacecraft engineers is the near-earth region of the inner radiation belts and the earth synchronous orbit at 19,300 n. miles. In Volume I (AD-659 722) and II (AD-659 723) of NASA SP-3024, the model environment was given for the lower altitude region where trapping is relatively stable and changes in radiation fluxes occur only slowly and are generally small. The position of the synchronous orbit is near the boundary of stable trapping and the particle fluxes vary through several orders of magnitude. At this time it is impossible to construct a model environment for this region of space which presents fully all temporal changes in both energy spectra and intensities of the trapped electrons. In order to present the actual situation, this compilation contains not only a statistical model of the environment but also most of the data from which this model was constructed.
