QCD-motivated, it gives a detailed description of hadron structure and soft interactions in the additive quark model, where hadrons are regarded as composite systems of dressed quarks.In the past decade it has become clear that nonperturbative QCD, responsible for soft hadronic processes, may differ rather drastically from perturbative QCD. The understanding of nonperturbative QCD requires a detailed investigation of the experiments and the theoretical approaches. Bearing this in mind, the book has been rewritten paying special attention to the interplay of soft hadronic collisions and the quark model. It is at the crossroads of these domains that peculiar features of strong QCD reveal themselves.The book discusses constituent quarks, diquarks, the massive effective gluons and the problem of scalar isoscalar mesons. The quark-gluonium classification of meson states is also given. Experimentally observed properties of hadrons are presented together with the corresponding theoretical interpretation in the framework of the composite hadron structure.The text includes a large theoretical part, which shows how to treat composite systems (including relativistic ones) with a technique based on spectral integration. This technique provides the possibility of handling hadrons as weakly bound systems of quarks and, at the same time, takes into account confinement.Attention is focused on the composite structure revealing itself in high energy hadron collisions. Fields of applicability of the additive quark model are discussed, as is colour screening in hadronic collisions at high and superhigh energies. Along with a detailed presentation of hadron-hadron collisions, a description of hadron-nucleus collisions is given.

Novel forms of matter, such as states made of gluons (glueballs), multiquark mesons or baryons and hybrid mesons are predicted by low energy QCD, for which several candidates have recently been identified. Searching for such exotic states of matter and studying their production and decay properties in detail has become a flourishing field at the experimental facilities now available or being built - e.g. BESIII in Beijing, BELLE II at SuperKEKB, GlueX at Jefferson Lab, PANDA at FAIR, J-PARC and in the upgraded LHC experiments, in particular LHCb. A modern primer in the field is required so as to both revive and update the teaching of a new generation of researchers in the field of QCD. These lectures on hadron spectroscopy are intended for Master and PhD students and have been originally developed for a course delivered at the Stefan Meyer Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. They are phenomenologically oriented and intended as complementary material for basic courses in particle and nuclear physics. The book describes the spectra of light and heavy mesons and baryons, and introduces the fundamental properties based on symmetries. Further, it derives multiplet structures, mixing angle, decay coupling constants, magnetic moments of baryons, and predictions for multiquark states and compares these with suitable experimental data. Since the discovery in the 1960's that the proton is not a fundamental particle but instead composed of even smaller particles known as quarks and gluons, there has been a concerted effort to understand the proton's internal structure. There still remain many mysteries about the proton and the theory that describes the interactions within: Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The distributions of quarks and gluons are encoded in objects known as parton correlation functions. Physicists use high-energy scattering experiments to access these functions by means of QCD factorization. This process of extracting information is known as a global QCD analysis. Further insight can be gained through first-principles calculations in lattice QCD as well as models for the strong interaction. In this thesis, we will use global QCD analyses to provide information on the one-dimensional (1D) structure of the proton using the latest experimental data available. Among the mysteries that remain within the proton, we provide insight on the non-perturbative nature of the proton's sea quarks, for both cases where the proton is unpolarized and longitudinally polarized. We also bring new information on the "proton spin puzzle," which concerns the delegation of the proton's spin into its constituent quarks and gluons. We shed light on the proton's transversely polarized structure, where current results from global QCD analyses and lattice QCD fail to paint a consistent picture. Our analyses also reveal a new feature of nuclear effects within light, highly asymmetric nuclei such as helium and tritium. Finally, we perform derivations in a spectator diquark model to glean information on the proton's 3D structure, and calculate moments that can be used in future lattice QCD studies.
