Originally submitted as a dissertation (theology) at the University of Brussels, this book is mainly concerned with German colonialism and the role of the Rhenish Missionary Society during the colonial period in Namibia. Although the church is defended against some of it critics, the author demonstrates how the mission supported the supression of the people's fight against exploitation. The author concludes that the church must avoid repeating the past error of failing to speak up against an unjust society. De Vries was one of the foremost church leaders in Namibia before he resigned to join the South African administration in 1980. In 1983-84 he was one of the leading spokesmen of the "Multi-Party Conference". (Eriksen/Moorsom 1989).

In this study the interactions are traced between the urge for freedom of the Namibian people and the Christian ideology brought to Namibia partly by the Oorlam-Nama commando groups from the Cape, and partly by the German and Finnish Lutheran Missions. From the very beginning of European colonial conquest, the various population groups in Namibia started their fight for freedom from oppression and for human rights. In this struggle, Christian ideology was an important source of inspiration despite the intention of the European Mission to strengthen European imperialism by their concept of a "Christian European civilization". Many indigenous churchgoers lost confidence in the Missions, and provided an early impetus to the courageous stand taken in the 1960s by the Lutheran Churches in support of the Namibian liberation struggle. The study is framed by the secular, historical events during colonial occupation; and different aspects of European imperialism are traced. The author is a Swedish theologian and former missionary, who has close connections with Swapo, the Namibian political party.

This edited collection re-examines the long history of Finnish-Namibian relations through the lens of colonialism without colonies as well as anti-colonialism. The book argues that although Finland never acquired colonies, Namibia was once treated in the areas of culture and knowledge formation in a manner now recognised as colonial. Namibian people’s ways of being in the world was transformed when the Finnish Missionary Society started its work in Owambo in 1870 and introduced Christianity and European modes of education, medicine, material culture and social practices. In time, cultural colonialism faded and during the Namibian struggle for independence from South African rule in 1966–1990 Finns took an actively anti-colonial approach. The book was written as a collaborative effort of Namibian, Finnish and South African scholars.

Caprivi, the remote and narrow Namibian strip of land encapsulated by neighbouring Angola, Zambia and Botswana, has a contested colonial and postcolonial history. Bennett Kangumu traces the politics of its people in this complex borderlands since the late 19th century. Neglected by German and South African colonial administrations, its inhabitants were often pushed towards neighbouring territories though not being an integral part of them. At the same time, South African apartheid and homeland politics emphasised the ethnization of local identities. Becoming a strategic location in the ensuing liberation wars of the late 20th century, its history is often one of conquest and resistance, plunder, betrayal and rivalry. Kangumu shows how the inhabitants of Caprivi responded in various ways, notably in the form of regional nationalism when the Caprivi African National Union (CANU) was formed in the early 1960s. The Unions merger with the dominant Namibian liberation movement, SWAPO, was a claim to end seperation and isolation, which, however, flarred up again in post-colonial Namibia.

This book, the first new scholarly general history of Namibia in two decades, provides a fresh synthesis of these events, and of the much longer pre-colonial period.
