Book Description
Jeremy Rich uses the eccentric life of R. L. Garner (1848-1920) to examine the commercial networks that brought the first apes to America during the Progressive Era, a critical time in the development of ideas about African wildlife, race, and evolution. Garner was a self-taught zoologist and atheist from southwest Virginia. Starting in 1892, he lived on and off in the French colony of Gabon, studying primates and trying to engage U.S. academics with his theories. Most prominently, Garner claimed that he could teach apes to speak human languages and that he could speak the languages of primates. Garner brought some of the first live primates to America, launching a traveling demonstration in which he claimed to communicate with a chimpanzee named Susie. He was often mocked by the increasingly professionalized scientific community, who were wary of his colorful escapades, such as his ill-fated plan to make a New York City socialite the queen of southern Gabon, and his efforts to convince Thomas Edison to finance him in Africa. Yet Garner did influence evolutionary debates, and as with many of his era, race dominated his thinking. Garner's arguments--for example, that chimpanzees were more loving than Africans, or that colonialism constituted a threat to the separation of the races--offer a fascinating perspective on the thinking and attitudes of his times. Missing Links explores the impact of colonialism on Africans, the complicated politics of buying and selling primates, and the popularization of biological racism.

Zoo Story

Category : Nature

Book Description
“This story, told by a master teller of such things, does more than take you inside the cages, fences, and walls of a zoo. It takes you inside the human heart, and an elephant’s, and a primate’s, and on and on. Tom French did in this book what he always does. He took real life and wrote it down for us, with eloquence and feeling and aching detail.” —Rick Bragg, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and bestselling author “An insightful and detailed look at the complex life of a zoo and its denizens, both animal and human.” —Yann Martel, author of Life of Pi and Beatrice and Virgil Welcome to the savage and surprising world of Zoo Story, an unprecedented account of the secret life of a zoo and its inhabitants. Based on six years of research, the book follows a handful of unforgettable characters at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo: an alpha chimp with a weakness for blondes, a ferocious tiger who revels in Obsession perfume, and a brilliant but tyrannical CEO known as El Diablo Blanco. The sweeping narrative takes the reader from the African savannah to the forests of Panama and deep into the inner workings of a place some describe as a sanctuary and others condemn as a prison. Zoo Story shows us how these remarkable individuals live, how some die, and what their experiences reveal about the human desire to both exalt and control nature.

My Life in the Cleveland Zoo
Author: Adam A. Smith
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780983306993
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 418
Book Description
My Life in the Cleveland Zoo is a ground-level report of a time when society was changing rapidly. In 1968, Adam Smith took a summer job at the zoo as a tour train driver. In this position, he lived in the margin between the public's experience and what seemed to him to be an alien world of full-time keepers and staff. In that gap, a lot of adolescent hijinks crept into the routine of the part-time summer employees who were out-of-control and flying beneath the radar of the management. After graduating college and spending some years in the corporate world, he found his way back to the zoo as a retreat to a healthier life. He left the world of ulcers for a summer on a tour train. By now, he was older and could see differences in himself and a zoo evolving and rebuilding to promote positive attitudes toward wildlife preservation. Instead of being a curiosity for the public, zoological gardens everywhere were recreating more natural environments and working cooperatively to protect endangered species. Other things were changing in the 1970s. The government implemented Title VII and employers were no longer permitted to discriminate on the basis of gender when hiring. This meant women were entering the all-male fraternity of keepers, and background qualifications were replacing an inviolate seniority system. Adam witnessed the beginnings of these transitions. He graduated from his part-time role to that of night watchman and eventually became a keeper in the Pachyderm Building. This is a unique look into a somewhat bizarre world of danger and manure. It is a memoir of a particular point in history when change ruled the day.
