La mise en œuvre des démarches qualité est encore récente dans les hôpitaux. Les pays-anglo-saxons ont été les premiers à percevoir leur intérêt et la nécessité de contrôler leur mise en œuvre dans les différents établissements de soins. Des référentiels qualité dédiés à l’activité hospitalière et leurs systèmes de certification associés ont ainsi vu le jour dès les années 80. En France, tous les hôpitaux ont depuis 1996 l’obligation de s’engager dans la certification HAS. Au-delà des exigences réglementaires, certains services ou cliniques prennent parfois l’initiative de s’appuyer sur des référentiels non spécifiques à la santé tel que l’ISO 9001. De par son statut, la Polynésie française dispose d’une réglementation différente de celle de la France. Le Centre Hospitalier de Polynésie française (CHPf), lieu de l’étude, n’a ainsi aucune contrainte d’engagement dans une démarche de certification bien que ses contraintes budgétaires ou les attentes de ses patients soient tout à fait similaires à celles de la métropole et motivent l’établissement à suivre cette voie. Aucun référentiel n’étant imposé, plusieurs stratégies de déploiement d’une démarche qualité s’offrent aux établissements de soins de Polynésie française et sont détaillées dans cette étude. Dans cette optique, deux référentiels ont été expérimentés au CHPF : la certification HAS et l’ISO 9001. La conclusion de cette étude détaille les avantages et inconvénients de ces démarches et fait apparaitre celle qui est la plus adaptée à un établissement nouvellement engagé dans la qualité et la gestion des risques.

Despite the difference in their populations and political status, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea have comparable levels of economic dependence on the extraction and export of mineral resources. For this reason, the costs and benefits of large-scale mining projects for indigenous communities has been a major political issue in both jurisdictions, and one that has come to be negotiated through multiple channels at different levels of political organisation. The ‘resource boom’ that took place in the early years of the current century has only served to intensify the political contests and conflicts that surround the distribution of social, economic and environmental costs and benefits between community members and other ‘stakeholders’ in the large-scale mining industry. However, the mutual isolation of Anglophone and Francophone scholars has formed a barrier to systematic comparison of the relationship between large-scale mines and local-level politics in Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia, despite their geographical proximity. This collection of essays represents an effort to overcome this barrier, but is also intended as a major contribution to the growth of academic and political debate about the social impact of the large-scale mining industry in Melanesia and beyond.

“Tahiti is far famed yet too little known.” Thus wrote J. M. Orsmond in 1848, and the same assertion can be made in 1972. Terrorism and radicalization have a long history, but in recent years their prominence has been a particularly conspicuous and influential feature of the global political landscape. This important book presents an overview of the processes involved in radicalization and terrorism, and introduces a systematic framework which captures the most crucial individual and social factors involved in determining these processes. The authors begin by considering the possible role of prejudice, economic deprivation, and discrimination, and the cognitive responses and emotions they can trigger. Such responses tend in turn to increase the importance of group membership, and promote intergroup differentiation and polarization, a process which is often accompanied by more pronounced and more extreme religious and ideological beliefs. The book also describes the role of cultural values and social climate in processes of radicalization, as well as the role of personality factors and demographics such as age and marital status. As for violent terrorist action itself, this final most radical stage is elicited by a number of group factors such as groupthink, isolation, and leadership.
