Book Description
The purpose of this book is to introduce one of the most significant international developments of the post World War II era-the dramatic socio-economic transformation achieved by Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. In less than three decades, these "minidragons" of Asia have become major economic players, not only in the economy of the Pacific rim, but in the global economic system as well. In the essays which follow, the nature of this transformation is charted; its causes are described; and some assessment is made of the factors that will shape the future of these "fragile economic miracles." This volume was originally conceived as a companion to the television series entitled Minidragons, an international co-production of Maryland Public Television (MPT) with NHK, Japan, and Film Australia.

Book Description
Responding to the "Asian values" debate over the compatibility of Confucianism and liberal democracy, Confucianism, Democratization, and Human Rights in Taiwan, by Joel S. Fetzer and J. Christopher Soper, offers a rigorous, systematic investigation of the contributions of Confucian thought to democratization and the protection of women, indigenous peoples, and press freedom in Taiwan. Relying upon a unique combination of empirical analysis of public opinion surveys, legislative debates, public school textbooks, and interviews with leading Taiwanese political actors, this essential study documents the changing role of Confucianism in Taiwan's recent political history. While the ideology largely bolstered authoritarian rule in the past and played little role in Taiwan's democratization, the belief system is now in the process of transforming itself in a pro-democratic direction. In contrast to those who argue that Confucianism is inherently authoritarian, the authors contend that Confucianism is capable of multiple interpretations, including ones that legitimate democratic forms of government. At both the mass and the elite levels, Confucianism remains a powerful ideology in Taiwan despite or even because of the island's democratization. Borrowing from Max Weber's sociology of religion, the writers provide a distinctive theoretical argument for how an ideology like Confucianism can simultaneously accommodate itself to modernity and remain faithful to its core teachings as it decouples itself from the state. In doing so, Fetzer and Soper argue, Confucianism is behaving much like Catholicism, which moved from a position of ambivalence or even opposition to democracy to one of full support. The results of this study have profound implications for other Asian countries such as China and Singapore, which are also Confucian but have not yet made a full transition to democracy.

In the sequel to "The Prisoner," we find ourselves traveling with the boys from Uncava. Nicho and Micah, reunited in the Yarnie village, are instructed by Katielda to head east as they continue their search for the missing girls. Unbeknownst to them, they are also on their way to answering very important questions in an adventure of a lifetime. In the beginning of their journey they speak to Boheall, an ancient and mysterious creature who first tells them a story then instructs them to go to the Dryas Forest where they must locate another creature named Teresia. It is she who will guide them safely to the edge of the large body of water that is home to the Castle of Tears. They have no way of knowing that they are about to discover an ominously dark and dangerous lake where growling, unseen creatures lurk in the shadows. Once there, the boys both sense how imperative it is for them to find some way across this water as they search for the place where the mysterious blue amulet known in the world of Euqinom as 'Dragon's Tear' is said to be hidden. Will the boys succeed in finding this very special second amulet that has already fallen into an evil sorcerer's hands? And if they are able to find it, will they succeed in retrieving it and return it to the dragons without becoming victims of their own incredible journey? Book Description
Though certainly not a new idea, citizenship education manifests in unique and often unpredictable ways in our contemporary neoliberal era. The question of what it means to be a productive and recognized citizen must now be understood simultaneously along both global and local lines. This edited volume offers an international perspective on citizenship education enacted in specific socio-political contexts. Each chapter includes a pointed conceptualization of citizenship education—a philosophical framework—that is then applied to specific national cases across Europe, Asia, Canada and more. Chapters emphasize how such frameworks are implemented within local contexts, encouraging particular pedagogical/curricular practices even as they constrain others. Chapters conclude with suggestions for productive change and how educators might usefully engage contemporary contexts through citizenship education.
