Excerpt from Surveying: With Sections on Map Reading, Military Sketching and Topographic Drawing There are two fundamentals that the Committee wishes to impress upon instructors: 1. An efficient instructor must be accurately informed as to what jobs a carpenter, or a blacksmith, for instance, may be called upon to do in the Army. 2. Methods of instruction must be used which in the time available will best train men to do these jobs. To assist instructors in these two important respects, new course outlines are being prepared by the Committee on Education and Special Training. As soon as completed they will be issued to the co-operating schools. These outlines are sufficiently definite to produce that degree of specialization required by the various Army Corps; yet they are also sufficiently flexible to allow for the broader development of resourcefulness and initiative which are essential to the men in the army. Results to be obtained have been set down rather than detailed methods of accomplishing results. Such details can be developed best in each institution through the ingenuity of the instructors in charge. A promotion program is preferable to a rotating one. It is not desirable to follow rigidly a plan which provides that all students get a definite length of time on each of a number of specified subjects in rotation, though such a program is well suited to the most able men. The work should be organized so that while the most able men will get the entire course of instruction, others will omit those subjects for which they have no special aptitude, giving full time and attention to those things in which they show promise of success. In general this means a course arranged not for the average but for the best student and then administered so that only those men who show or develop ability on one job will be promoted to the next more difficult task. To illustrate: In the auto-mechanic squad only those men who have thoroughly mastered the details of the axle and wheel work will progress to engine work, and then again only those who show a good understanding of engine construction will take up further study of gas engine performance. Again only those who show special all-around ability in these things will proceed further with the study of ignition, timing and the more complicated details of operation. Excerpt from Training Manual in Topography, Map Reading and Reconnaissance Note 3 - Our Field Service Regulations provide that the contour interval should be 10 feet for a military sketch made on a scale of 6 inches to the mile, 20 feet for. A sketch on a scale of 3 inches to the mile, and, in general, the proper contour interval for any scale isto be found by dividing 60 by the number of inches on the scale which represents a mile on the ground. This system of scales is known as the United States Army Normal System. The British Army have a similar system, using 50 as the base instead of 60. In small-scale mapping these systems are usually not adhe to. The United States Geological Survey use an interval of 20 feet for their (about an inch to the mile) sheets, reducing this to 10 or even 5 feet in very flat country and increasing it for mountainous country. Excerpt from Military Sketching and Map Reading: For Non-Commissioned Officers (Illustrated) This book was written to fulfill the following urgent requirements: 1. A textbook of Military Sketching and Map Reading within the comprehension of the average non-commissioned officer of the Mobile Land Forces. 2. A textbook which will relieve organization commanders of devising a new course each year and which will standardize the instruction and furnish a uniform basis for the prescribed tests by battalion commanders and inspectors. 3. A textbook in which Military Sketching and Map Reading go hand in hand, each being an amplification of the other. 4. A textbook in lesson form, each lesson being carefully planned as to the amount and proper sequence of its subject matter, and the number of lessons being such that the course may be completed within the time usually available for this subject in the Garrison School Course for Non-Commissioned Officers. The author bases his knowledge of the capacity of the average non-commissioned officer upon observations made during three years in which he was engaged on duty in connection with the Progressive Military Map of the United States and the Philippine Islands, four years in which he instructed the non-commissioned officers of the companies to which he was assigned, and during the past two years as Officer in Charge of Map Section, Military Information Division, Manila, P. I. While on duty in connection with the Progressive Military Map he was assisted by enlisted men form the various branches of the Mobile Army, and since being on duty in the Military Information Division, it has been one of his routine duties to review the vast number of sketches turned in to be filed. In view of the above observations, it is believed that a knowledge of the subject matter of this book should be readily acquired by the average non-commissioned officer.
