Book Description
TRANSLATED BY W. ROBSON. WITH PREFACE AND SUPPLEMENTARY CHAPTER BY HAMILTON W. MABIE. Most know the purpose of the Crusades was the re-capture of Jerusalem by Christian forces from the sweeping Muslim victories of previous centuries and to protect pilgrimages to the Holy sites. Beginning with the 1st Crusade in 1096 and ending with the 9th (which is sometimes grouped with the 8th although it should be noted other expeditions both military and economic are sometimes were also called 'Crusades' and some re-numbering exists from the 5th Crusade onwards) in 1271 their history is a fascinating example of how disparate Western Nations under Papal authority (and sometimes lack of) allied and fought together. It is also a shocking example of how these same nations fought and squabbled amongst themselves most tragically in the 4th Crusade when it sacked Orthodox Christian Constantinople and later crusades when it fought in Egypt as a means to cut off supply lines to the Holy Land. Despite many early successes there were equally many failures. In these volumes the French historian Joseph François Michaud (1767-1839) examines and brings this centuries long series of engagements to historical review.

Book Description
The exuberant art of Gustave Doré (1832-83) has influenced romantics and realists around the world. A self-taught child prodigy who met with early and resounding success, Doré ranks among the most prolific and popular illustrators of all time. Known as "the master of the fantastic," he excelled in conveying dramatic action in memorable settings. This original collection assembles for the first time Doré's best work depicting knights and their adventures. It features eighty-six captivating scenes of battles, damsels, dragons, and other images from the Age of Chivalry. Advances in science and technology introduced irrevocable changes to the society of Doré and his contemporaries and aroused a nostalgia for simpler times. The moral certitude and stability embodied in Arthurian myths and other medieval romances proved as appealing to Victorians as they do to modern audiences. This collection features highlights from eight volumes that span more than two decades of Doré's career, including scenes from Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Other sources include Don Quixote, Orlando Furioso, Rabelais' The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel, and Michaud's History of the Crusades.

Book Description
"Seven Myths of the Crusades' rebuttal of the persistent and multifarious misconceptions associated with topics including the First Crusade, anti-Judaism and the Crusades, the crusader states, the Children's Crusade, the Templars and past and present Islamic-Christian relations proves, once and for all, that real history is far more fascinating than conspiracy theories, pseudo-history and myth-mongering. This book is a powerful witness to the dangers of the misappropriation and misinterpretation of the past and the false parallels so often drawn between the crusades and later historical events ranging from nineteenth-century colonialism to the protest movements of the 1960s to the events of 9/11. This volume's authors have venerable track records in teaching and researching the crusading movement, and anyone curious about the crusades would do well to start here." —Jessalynn Bird, Dominican University, co-Editor of Crusade and Christendom
