Book Description
This report describes recommended methods for scanning the flight path and cockpit instruments for pilots wearing night vision goggles (NVGs) while flying Army helicopters. The impetus for this report was a task force sponsored by the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army for Plans and Operations, which determined that the development of scanning methods was the Army's top training priority for night helicopter operations. The recommended methods of scanning were derived from published scientific works, interviews with scientists, and interviews with aviators from field tactical units, training units, and from the research and development community. The proposed scanning methods recommend free search as opposed to formalized scan patterns. In addition, they place equal weight on crew coordination and individual technique. The proposed methods stress actions taken before flight, such as premission planning and NVG preflight adjustments. Furthermore, the proposed methods are intended to build an awareness of: NVG performance limits, and how to maximize performance; common problems encountered while scanning with NVGs, and the conditions which elicit them; and the scientific basis for scanning. Separate scanning methods were developed for individuals and for crews. In addition, the relevant scientific literature was reviewed. Night vision goggles, Scanning, Free search, Formalized scan patterns, Crew coordination.

Book Description
"The report documents an instructional program on unaided night vision skills and knowledge critical to all ground force night operations. The program was developed jointly by the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI), the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory, and the Naval Aerospace and Operational Medical Institute. A series of experiments conducted by ARI showed the program to be effective with both experienced soldiers and Infantry trainees. The program is presented in the dark using neutral density filters on 35-mm slides to allow individuals to dark adapt over a 30- to 45- minute instructional period. Demonstrations show what happens to vision at night as well as techniques to reduce visual illusions and other problems encountered at night. The report contains the instructional guide for the program, a separate summary of the program content, and a job aid to remind soldiers of critical night vision concepts and guidelines regarding use of their eyes during night exercises." -- Abstract.

Book Description
This book is about video techniques, not video technology. To deal with the latter would be a thankless task, as by the time the book was published it would be out of date, given the rapid rate of development of video hardware. However, these technological advances do help to make it an exciting field. As Joe Riley says in Chapter 1, 'Advances in video technology continually produce improvements in performance and reductions in both the cost and size of equipment, so it seems certain that the technique will prove to be an even more useful resource . . . in the future. ' In selecting the topics and authors represented in this book, I have tried to encompass most of the behavioural and ecological uses to which video is likely to be put over the next decade or so. I believe the book has captured the invaluable accumulated experience of the most active practitioners of the medium in this research area. The idea for the book arose from two workshops on the use of video in ecology and behaviour held at Southampton University, UK, during the 1980s. Three learned societies were involved in these meetings: the Association of Applied Biologists, the British Ecological Society and the Society for Experimental Biology.
