Literature suggests that mental illness, particularly depression and trauma, is extremely prevalent in Latino populations, with low rates of psychological service use. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that would decrease or increase the use of mental health services in Latino populations. The data for this thesis came from: (1) 563 Latino college students were sampled via a confidential, online survey at a Southern California university; and (2) 90 Latino college students who participated in eight focus groups. Results correspond to prior literature, as only 21.0% of survey respondents stated they may want to receive counseling in the future, and participants endorsed many negative attitudes toward psychological help. Participants who were interviewed suggested that the barriers that keep Latinos from seeking services include stigma, time, finances, and cultural factors (e.g. espiritualismo, familismo, machismo/marianismo, confianza, etc). Participants suggested outreach via media (e.g. fliers, telenovelas, etc) to increase awareness of mental health services and decrease stigma regarding using mental health services, as a way to facilitate treatment. Implications for community leaders, educators, practitioners, and policy-makers will be discussed.

Latinos are the fastest growing and largest minority group in the United States. In 2008, this group numbered over 47 million; by 2050, the population is expected to triple, reaching 133 million. Traditionally, Latinos have immigrated to large urban centers (e.g., New York, Los Angeles) that over long periods of time developed a complex infrastructure to receive new immigrants. Increasingly, new Spanish-speaking immigrants are moving into areas of the country previously unfamiliar to them. Although urban co-ethnic communities continue to be the destination of many newcomers, immigrants from Mexico, Central America, and South America in pursuit of low-skilled labor opportunities are settling in small towns and rural areas of the South and Midwest. This new demographic trend has resulted in the creation of the term "new growth communities," which refers to small rural areas that are now home to a small but rapidly growing Hispanic population. Unfortunately, these communities, which are now present in many states across the country (e.g., Illinois, North Carolina), lack the infrastructure necessary to meet the needs of Latino immigrants (e.g., access to health care, immigration assistance, and breaking down language barriers). The lack of an infrastructure and the lack of an established ethnic community to facilitate the assimilation of new immigrants present an ongoing challenge, especially in the area of Latino mental health. The volume focuses on dealing with systemic issues and on providing innovative ideas for development of infrastructure of services. This text will advance ways to understand and ameliorate mental health disparities both from research and experiential perspectives.

This dissertation study contributes to the research on Latino mental health service utilization by examining the determinants of utilization of mental health services, while considering Latino socio-cultural factors. Using the Andersen Behavioral Model of Health Service Utilization (BMHSU) as a theoretical framework, secondary data analysis was conducted using the National Latino and Asian American Study (NLAAS), a nationally representative household survey, focusing on mental disorders and mental health service utilization. Results indicate that only 9% of the Latino population surveyed, including those with a depressive, anxiety, substance use, and/or behavioral disorder, report having used at least one source of mental health service. The findings highlight the BMHSU determinants of mental health service utilization and the need for research to increase our understanding of the socio-cultural barriers and facilitators to using mental health services among Latinos in the United States.

This chapter provides an overview of research on the mental health of Latinos in the United States with emphasis on the cultural constructs and theories with relevance for assessment and intervention with this population. A distinction is made between factors that confer advantages and those that may increase vulnerability at both the individual and environmental levels. This chapter suggests that treatment considerations need to be tailored based on individual needs that incorporate complexities of culture and gender so that clients are not viewed in a stereotypical manner. This discussion is followed by a summary of contemporary research rooted in positive and resilience psychology in order to build on strengths within the culture, such as positive ethnic identity, civic engagement, family support, bicultural teaching in the home, spirituality, and storytelling.

Latinos who qualify for Deferred Action Childhood Arrival (DACA) and currently attend institutions of higher education are a unique subset of this population in the United States. The current literature focuses on all Latino DACA whether in or out of college, recipients' experiences of discrimination and its impact on their mental health, and their lack of healthcare access: However, literature solely focusing on Latino collegiate DACA recipients is limited. Moreover, Latino collegiate DACA recipients have greater access to health care and health services through their universities, unlike non- collegiate DACA recipients. This dissertation proposes to study the how experiences of discrimination and microaggression affect help seeking behavior and utilization of mental health services of Latino DACA college students. Online survey will be sent to Latino students born in the United States and Latino DACA students to compare experiences of discrimination and its effects on mental health help seeking behavior and/or utilization of mental health services in both groups. Online survey data will be analyzed to measure if the observed Latino DACA collegiate students use of mental health services differ from the Latino college students born in the U.S. Logistic regression and linear regression. The difference in effect of experiences of discrimination on help-seeking and utilization of mental health services of Latino DACA college students compared to Latino college students born in the United States will also be analyzed. Phenomenological study interviews will be conducted with 30 Latino DACA students who had taken the previous online survey to analyze their experiences with discrimination and their mental health help seeking behavior and/or utilization of mental health services. These interviews will be collected and analyzed using thematic analysis to draw out key themes related to experiencing discrimination and mental health help-seeking behavior. Looking at the experiences of discrimination of DACA college students and how it affects their mental health help-seeking behavior is important to study in order to better address future research, policy making, and health access decisions.
