Book Description
Excerpt from Memorials of John Bartram and Humphry Marshall: With Notices of Their Botanical Contemporaries It may be well, perhaps, by a brief and simple statement here, to explain to the reader how it happened, that the compiler obtained access to the materials of this volume, and was permitted thus to use them. More than thirty years ago, the late Doctor William Baldwin suggested to the Editor, the propriety of some tribute to the memory of Humphry Marshall, to be prepared from his Correspondence, and other papers in the custody of his representatives. In that generous suggestion of his lamented friend, the Editor heartily concurred, and intimations of the purpose were accordingly made to the Marshall family; but the widow of Humphry, who was then living, and had charge of the papers, seemed unwilling to let them pass out of her possession, in consequence of which, nothing further was done at that time. Since the decease of Mrs. Marshall, the subject has been occasionally mentioned to the younger branches of the family, to whom the papers descended, and an urgent desire expressed, for the privilege of examining those interesting memorials. The request was politely assented to, as often as made; but, from the procrastination incident to such matters, it was only within a few months that Dr. Moses Marshall, Junior, grand-nephew of Humphry, actually placed the desired papers in the hands of the Editor, which, however, he did with the full permission and privilege of making such use of them as might be deemed appropriate. Dr. M. has also, in the most obliging manner, furnished a number of facts, dates, and traditionary anecdotes, connected with the history of his venerable kinsman. A Global History of Ginseng
Author: Heasim Sul
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000604144
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 281
Book Description
Sul’s history of the international ginseng trade reveals the cultural aspects of international capitalism and the impact of this single commodity on relations between the East and the West. Ginseng emerged as a major international commodity in the seventeenth century, when the East India Company began trading it westward. Europeans were drawn to the plant’s efficacy as a medicine, but their attempts to transplant it for mass production were unsuccessful. Also, due to a failure of extracting its active ingredients, Western pharmacology disparaged ginseng in the process of modernization. In the meantime, ginseng was discovered on the American continent and became one of the United States’ key exports to Asia and particularly China, but never cultivated a significant domestic market. As such, historicizing the ginseng trade provides a unique perspective on the impact of both culture and economics on international trade. A compelling interdisciplinary history of over five centuries of East–West trade and cultural exchange, this book will be invaluable to students and scholars of transnational history and a fascinating read for anyone interested in the history of international trade.
