In the Land of the Romanovs
Author: Anthony Cross
Publisher: Open Book Publishers
ISBN: 1783740574
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 440
Book Description
Over the course of more than three centuries of Romanov rule in Russia, foreign visitors and residents produced a vast corpus of literature conveying their experiences and impressions of the country. The product of years of painstaking research by one of the world’s foremost authorities on Anglo-Russian relations, In the Lands of the Romanovs is the realization of a major bibliographical project that records the details of over 1200 English-language accounts of the Russian Empire. Ranging chronologically from the accession of Mikhail Fedorovich in 1613 to the abdication of Nicholas II in 1917, this is the most comprehensive bibliography of first-hand accounts of Russia ever to be published. Far more than an inventory of accounts by travellers and tourists, Anthony Cross’s ambitious and wide-ranging work includes personal records of residence in or visits to Russia by writers ranging from diplomats to merchants, physicians to clergymen, gardeners to governesses, as well as by participants in the French invasion of 1812 and in the Crimean War of 1854-56. Providing full bibliographical details and concise but informative annotation for each entry, this substantial bibliography will be an invaluable tool for anyone with an interest in contacts between Russia and the West during the centuries of Romanov rule.

Memoirs of the Count de Rochechouart, 1788-1822, in France, Southern Russia, in the Napoleonic Wars, and as Commandant of Paris (Classic Reprint)
Author: Louis Victor Léon Rochechouart
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781330515617
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 350
Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Count De Rochechouart, 1788-1822, in France, Southern Russia, in the Napoleonic Wars, and as Commandant of Paris Born in 1788, that is to say, on the eve of the Great Revolution, I was exposed, from my earliest childhood, to hunger, cold, and all the miseries of humanity. Left an orphan when very young, without friend or fortune, I found in the Duc de Richelieu a protector who gave me shelter, and helped me up the first steps of my military career, a second father, who never ceased to show me the most tender affection. I shall ever feel the deepest gratitude to him, and this is my reason for publishing this book. I wish to make known the private life of this eminent statesman, his kindness, simplicity, charity, integrity, his love of duty and of his country. Nearly every town in France has raised a statue in honour of some man of greater or less celebrity; not one has remembered the Minister who was at the head of affairs from 1815 to 1819, who freed France from the Armies of Occupation, and restored her credit to such a degree that whereas the rente was valueless in 1816, it had risen to seventy-five francs in 1818; the Minister who made over to the sick poor the sum voted to him by the Chamber. Not one historian has been attracted by this noble figure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
