Book Description
Government attempts in recent years to create a national system of vocational education and training have marked a profound shift both in educational policy and in underlying concepts of what education is for. Relations between schools and the working world are changing all the time and the implementation of ideas of vocationalism has forced a blurring of the time-honoured boundaries between educations concerned with concepts and training, or with skills. The challenge now is to define how the schools can give young people the foundations for life in a working world in which they are likely to have to change jobs and where work will fill a smaller proportion of their lives. The Vocational Quest maps the evolution of vocationalism in Britain in historical terms and examines how the particular forms that have come into being in the last few years compare with developments in other parts of the world, including Continental Europe, Japan, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. It argues for new forms of communication and partnership between formal education and training and the wider community, in which values will be shared and no one partner will win at the expense of others.

Book Description
The greatest myth of modern times is the suggestion that capitalism and corporations do better with less government. The global economic crisis has certainly put paid to this idea. But the massive emergency state bailouts and interventions put in place from 2008 were unique only in their size and scale. Government programmes, designed to meet the needs of business, are not just everyday, they are everywhere and they are essential. Just as social welfare protects citizens from the cradle to the grave, corporate welfare protects and benefits corporations throughout their life course. And yet, in most countries, corporate welfare is hidden and underresearched. Drawing on comparative data from OECD states, this book seeks to shed light on the size, uses and importance of corporate welfareacross variouswelfare regimes.

Book Description
Just how much influence does powerful business in the UK have on government decision making in relation to social policy? Questions concerning the power and influence of business over social and public policy are increasingly being raised, not just from within the field of social policy but also in business and management studies and, beyond that, in the news and media. They are seldom answered in any satisfactory way. This groundbreaking book investigates and documents corporate influence on social policies at global/regional, national and local levels. It argues that we cannot understand the recent history and present direction of the welfare state unless we focus on the role that business has played in its development. Spanning the complete era of the Conservative governments and the first term of New Labour, it looks in particular at: mechanisms of corporate power and influence; corporate opinion and influence in a range of social policy areas including: education, training, health and social security; changing business influence on social policy in recent years in an international context; business involvement in social policy initiatives and welfare delivery. Book Description
The OECD has faced many challenges in the last 50 years, but perhaps none as great as the current global crisis. Response to the crisis has been swift and massive. But despite some cautious optimism, the immediate future does not offer much relief. The global economic system must undergo many structural changes if we are to avoid a repetition of this scenario. The job ahead is substantial and requires great perseverance. This is a key feature of the OECD , which has consistently worked with governments with a long-term view, to address structural problems through enhanced global co-operation. The crisis has left virtually no area of policy making untouched. It has brought many long-simmering issues, such as tax evasion, income inequality, good governance and competition issues, back to the centre stage. But other substantive, medium and long-term matters, such as climate change and poverty reduction, which were at the forefront of most government agendas only one year ago, are adding to the sense of urgency. This crisis presents opportunities as well as challenges, and the OECD is seizing these opportunities to formulate policies that will lead to a stronger, cleaner, fairer world economy. Over the past year, the OECD has pressed for a "stronger" world economy through its work in areas such as regulation; governance; trade (especially Doha); investment and competition; and, of course, developing policies for sustainable growth. Work on anticorruption, corporate governance and tax evasion has sought to restore trust in globalisation by making it "cleaner". So has, literally, our work on environment and climate change, another face of "cleaner". Finally, our work on employment and social inclusion, education, health care and economic development is key to developing a "fairer", more participative world economy. The OECD is the global standard setter in many of these fields. It helps governments to determine where policy changes are needed and how governments can implement those reforms. It is not surprising that the focus of much of this year's Annual Report is on the Organisation's analysis of and response to the crisis. The OECD 's unique ability to address the complex nature of the global crisis, which affects virtually every aspect of policy making, is presented and developed in the pages that follow. We will continue working with member and non-member countries, as well as with other international organisations, to establish the basis for a better world economy.
