Book Description
The »World Atlas of Jellyfish« presents in a lavishly illustrated multi-author compendium the more than 260 species of medusae (Scyphomedusae and Cubomedusae) described so far. The general, first part deals with their structure, complex life cycles and rare fossil records. But it also details on collection, cultivation and fishery methods, even gives hints for photography and cooking recipes. Additionally, it covers the nature of medusae venoms, the effects and treatment of their stings. The second part gives concise systematic descriptions of all jellyfish species and their developmental stages known so far. Numerous illustrations, distribution maps, taxonomic keys and literature lists allow for detailed identification and information. Outstanding among the wealth of wonderful illustrations are hitherto unpublished artistic colour paintings by Ernst Haeckel. The beauty of the animals is underlined by the demanding typesetting of the book. This »Atlas« is a unique overview summarizing our knowledge on the world's jellyfish in all their facets. It is of importance not only for scientists worldwide, but also a source of fascination for divers and lovers of marine life. Corresponding to its far-reaching relevance and to the internationality of contributing authors the volume is written in English.

Book Description
Infused with a sense of adventure and zeal for discovery, Seafaring Scientist recounts the achievements of a giant in the field of marine biology. Alfred Goldsborough Mayor (18681922), a Harvard-trained marine biologist and close associate of Alexander Agassiz, founded and directed on behalf of the Carnegie Institution the first tropical marine biological laboratory in the Western hemisphere. Located on Loggerhead Key in the Gulf of Mexico, the Tortugas Laboratory attracted some of America's most brilliant scientists. Mayor himself achieved international prominence in the field of biology for his authoritative work on jellyfishes and coral reefs.

Book Description
This reference work is designed to provide background information on an array of northeastern Pacific marine invertebrate species so that they can be more easily included in comparative studies of morphology, cell biology, reproduction, embryology, larval biology, and ecology. It is meant to serve biologists who are new to the field as well as experienced investigators who may not be familiar with the invertebrate fauna of the northern Pacific Coast. The species discussed in this volume are mostly from the cold temperate waters of the San Juan Archipelago, near Puget SOund and the Strait of Georgia, but the information and methods given will be useful in laboratories from Alaska to central California and applicable to some extend in other coastal or inland facilities. An introductory chapter discusses basic prodcedures for collecting and maintaining mature specimens, for initiating spawning, and for culturing embryos and larvae in the laboratory. Subsequent chapters summarize reproduction and development in thirty different invertebrate groups and provided ercent references through which additional information can be traced, cite monographs or keys needed to identify species, and give methods useful for studying an array of selected species. Available information on habitat, diet, reproductive mode, egg size, developmental pattern, developmental times, larval type, and conditions for settlement and metamorphosis is reported for over 450 species.

Beautifully illustrated, this is the only identification guide to zooplankton of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. Zooplankton are critical to the vitality of estuaries and coastal waters. In this revised edition of Johnson and Allen's instant classic, readers are taken on a tour of the miniature universe of zooplankton, including early developmental stages of familiar and diverse shrimps, crabs, and fishes. Zooplankton of the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts details the behavior, morphology, and coloration of these tiny aquatic animals. Precise descriptions and labeled illustrations of hundreds of the most commonly encountered species provide readers with the best source available for identifying zooplankton. Inside the second edition • an updated introduction that orients readers to the diversity, habitats, environmental responses, collection, history, and ecological roles of zooplankton • descriptions of life cycles • illustrations (including 88 new drawings) that identify 340-plus taxa and life stages • range, habits, and ecology for each entry located directly opposite the illustration • appendices with information on collection and observation techniques and citations of more than 1,300 scientific articles and books
