Book Description
This book, Recent Advances in Geriatrics, is based on the proceedings of the 8th Course of the School of Gerontology and Geriatrics held in Erice (Trapani, Italy) at the In ternational Centre for Scientific Culture "Ettore Majorana" on March 20-25, 1997. This international effort was organized jointly by professors from the University of Palermo (It aly) and from Wayne State University (Michigan, USA) as a result of a cross-cultural col laboration of several years. _ The increasing average age of the populations in industrialized countries has re sulted in increased interest in the different biological, medical, psychological, and eco nomic aspects related to the health and social care of the elderly. Physicians and health care practitioners are realizing the need for a revised approach to geriatric care. Comprising contributions of clinicians and scientists from Italy and North America, the present volume provides a multidisciplinary approach to many gerontological and geriatric problems, examined from a scientific and a practical point of view. Several of the most important aspects of the aging process - the genetics of aging, body composition modification, immunological, endocrinological, and renal physiology changes - have been addressed. Data from a multi-center Italian study on centenarians is reported, to gether with an update on clinical and pharmacological approaches to dementia syndromes and economic and social aspects related to the care of the elderly.

Book Description
Syndicated columnist and beloved pediatrition, Marilyn Heins, MD, has fashioned a pathway through the transformative senior years of life after having entered the octogenarian years, herself. Gleaned from her experiences as she navigates the changes that come with aging, A Traveler's Guide to Geriatrica is augmented with inciteful yet playful illustrations by renowned political cartoonist, David Fitzsimmons. Marilyn takes on her role of tour guide through this new terrain with her typical poise and acumen, while offering a healthy dose of humor. Approaching the aging journey as a landscape in an unfamiliar country, Heins imagines us all to be immigrants in the land of Geriatrica. During the voyage, she visits somewhat familiar, yet not quite known stops along the way. The conceit affords discussions of topics such as: dangers and perils of the journey; preparations; scams to be attentive of; downsizing; housing need changes; the importance of simplifying; on being an octogenarian; frailing; health and safety; mental health; finances later in life; teaching children about Geriatrica; canines in Geriatrica - all shared with Marilyn's indelable dry wit and celebration of life lived well into one's latter years. In the end, Geriatrica is seen as a land that if fortunate to live long enough to visit, holds not only new challenges and perils, but rich finds and wondrous experiences that continue to enrich days well lived.

Book Description
This volume marks the first of a new series, Contemporary Geriatric Medicine, joining the ever growing "Contemporary" family. As with the other "Contem porary" volumes, our goal is to assist the reader in maintaining currency in a rapidly changing field. Perhaps no field has shown such major advances in such a short time as geriatrics. Over the last several years, the "demographic impera tive" has become a source of concern for many, including clinicians, scientists, econ omists, and health planners. Our geriatric knowledge base continues to grow, often making it difficult to keep abreast of advances and current therapeutic modalities. Contemporary Ger iatric Medicine presents the state-of-the-art thinking regarding a variety of topics all of major concern to the health practitioner caring for the elderly person. The authors, for the most part serving as members of a stable editorial board, have chosen topics that should have immediate interest to the readership. By having a stable editorial board, continuity is ensured in successive volumes. Every two years, a subsequent issue will either address new thoughts on already presented topics or focus on new topics of current interest. As with the other "Contempo rary" series volumes, the every other year interval is intended to allow new find ings to develop and be tested. It also provides the authors with time to provide the highest quality of work.
