Book Description
The MRC currently employs more than 40,000 people, working in the UK and overseas. The Council spent £251m on intramural support of UK medical research (£222.6m on resource and £28.4m on capital) during financial year 2004-05. The MRC Cambridge Centre for Stem Cell Biology and Medicine was established. This Centre will carry out basic research into basic biology underpinning the development of stem cell treatments for diabetes and diseases of the brain, including Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. In July 2004, the health minister officially opened the UK Stem Cell Bank at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control. Cash income from licensing increased substantially from £15.2m in 2003/04 to £28.5m in 2004/05 - largely the result of higher royalty income under patent licences in antibody engineering and humanised antibodies.
