Book Description
Detailed characterization of fuzzy interactions will be of central importance for understanding the diverse biological functions of intrinsically disordered proteins in complex eukaryotic signaling networks. In this volume, Peter Tompa and Monika Fuxreiter have assembled a series of papers that address the issue of fuzziness in molecular interactions. These papers provide a broad overview of the phenomenon of fuzziness and provide compelling examples of the central role played by fuzzy interactions in regulation of cellular signaling processes and in viral infectivity. These contributions summarize the current state of knowledge in this new field and will undoubtedly stimulate future research that will further advance our understanding of fuzziness and its role in biomolecular interactions.

Book Description
Soil and Sediment Remediation discusses in detail a whole set of remediative technologies currently available to minimise their impact. Technologies for the treatment of soils and sediments in-situ (landfarming, bioscreens, bioventing, nutrient injection, phytoremediation) and ex-situ (landfarming, bio-heap treatment, soil suspension reactor) will be discussed. The microbiological, process technological and socio-economical aspects of these technologies will be addressed. Special attention will be given to novel biotechnological processes that utilise sulfur cycle conversions, e.g. sulfur and heavy metal removal from soils. Also the potential of phytoremediation will be highlighted. In addition, treatment schemes for the clean-up of polluted megasites, e.g. harbours and Manufactured Gaswork Plants (MGP), will be elaborated. The aim of Soil and Sediment Remediation is to introduce the reader in: the biogeochemical characteristics of soil and sediments- new techniques to study soil/sediment processes (molecular probes, microelectrodes, NMR) clean up technologies for soils polluted with organic (PAH, NAPL, solvents) or inorganic (heavy metals) pollutants- preventative and remediative strategies and technologies available in environmental engineering novel process applications and bioreactor designs for bioremediation the impact of soil pollution on society and its economic importance.

Book Description
Environmental nanotechnology is considered to play a key role in shaping of current environmental engineering and science practices. This book titled "Environmental Nanotechnology" covers the advanced materials, devices, and system development for use in the environmental protection. The development of nano-based materials, understanding their chemistry and characterization using techniques like X- Ray diffraction, FT-IR, EDX, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), high resolution-TEM, etc is included. It also highlights the scope for their applications in environmental protection, environmental remediation and environmental biosensors for detection, monitoring and assessment. Key Features: Covers basic to advanced Nano-based materials, their synthesis, development, characterization and applications and all the updated information related to environmental nanotechnology. Discusses implications of nanomaterials on the environment and applications of nanotechnology to protect the environment. Illustrates specific topics such as ethics of nanotechnology development, Nano-biotechnology, and application in wastewater technology. Includes applications of nanomaterials for combating global climate change and carbon sequestration. Gives examples of field applications of environmental nanotechnology. This book covers advanced materials, devices, and system developments for use in environmental protection. The development of nano-based materials, understanding its chemistry and characterization by the use of X-Ray diffraction, FT-IR, EDX, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and high resolution-TEM give the scope for their application in environmental protection, environmental remediation, and environmental biosensors for detection, monitoring, and assessment. The green chemistry based on nano-based materials prevents pollution and controls environmental contaminants.

Book Description
The treatment of contaminated soil is a permanently relevant subject for ensuirng the quality of the environment. A wide variety of soils contaminated witht a broad range of harmful chemical compounds all around the the world, call for many different treatment strategies. Research activities focus on affordable methods offering the greatest possible effect, whilst limiting the potential side effects. This book sums up the research activities of Research Centre 188 which has cooperated with the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, the University of Hamburg and GKSS in Geesthacht over the last 12 years, thus greatly advancing our knowledge in this field.

Book Description
In What's the Matter with the Internet?, leading cultural theorist Mark Poster offers a sophisticated and astute assessment of the potential the new medium has to redefine culture and politics. Avoiding the mindless hype and meaningless jargon that has characterized much of the debate about the future of the Web, he details what truly distinguishes the Internet from other media and the implications these novel properties have for such vital issues as authorship, national identity and global citizenship, the fate of ethnicity and race, and democracy. Arguing that the Internet demands a social and cultural theory appropriate to the specific qualities of cyberspace, Poster reformulates the ideas of thinkers associated with our understanding of post-modern culture and the media (including Foucault, Deleuze, Heidegger, Baudrillard, and Derrida) to account for and illuminate the virtual world, paying particular attention to its political dimensions and the nature of identity. In this innovative analysis, Poster acknowledges that although the colonization of the Internet by corporations and governments does threaten to retard its capacity to bring about genuine change, the new medium is still capable of transforming both contemporary social practices and the way we see the world and ourselves.
