Book Description
Fermilab Experiment 866 has performed an absolute measurement of continuum dimuon (Drell-Yan) cross sections in 800-GeV/c pp and pd interactions. Results differential in the mass, Feynman-x (xF) and transverse momenta (pT) of the dimuon pairs are reported. These results represent the most extensive study of the Drell-Yan process to date, based on a data sample of 175,000 dimuon events covering the widest range in kinematics yet achieved (4.2d"M d"16.85 GeV and -0.05 d"xF d"0.8) with this level of precision. The cross sections are primarily sensitive to the magnitude and shape of the light antiquark distributions ($\bar{d}$(x) and $\bar{u}$(x)) in the nucleon, but also provide important information on the valence quarks as well as the gluons. They are in good agreement with other existing proton-induced Drell-Yan experiments. There is also general agreement between the data and next-to-leading-order calculations based on various sets of parton distribution functions. Differences between data and theory are examined, and the potential impact of these data on future parameterizations of the parton distributions are be discussed.

Book Description
The associated production of a W boson and a single charm quark (W+c) is the only process in proton-proton collisions that directly probes the strange quark content of the proton. In this thesis, W+charm production is measured in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at 13 TeV, as recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The analysis focuses on the identification of W bosons in their leptonic decay to a muon and a neutrino and charm quarks are tagged via the full reconstruction of D*-Mesons. The measured cross sections of W+c production are used, in combination with other relevant CMS results and the most precise HERA DIS data, in a QCD analysis to determine the strange quark content of the proton. The resulting strange quark distribution and suppression, with respect to the other light sea quarks, are in good agreement with those obtained in neutrino scattering experiments and extend their kinematic reach.

Book Description
The measurements of dimuon production (M> GeV/c2) by 125 GeV/c anti p and .pi.− performed by Fermilab Experiment 537 are compared to the predictions of the Drell-Yan model in this report. We find that the naive Drell-Yan cross sections calculated using CDHS and NA3 structure functions are too low by factors of 2.25 +- 0.45 and 2.50 +- 0.50 to reproduce the levels of our anti p and .pi.− cross sections respectively. The shapes of the dsigma/dx/sub F/ and M3 dsigma/dM differential cross sections are well reproduced by the naive zeroth order formula. The shape of the dsigma/dp/sub T/ cross section for the dimuons as measured by E-537 can be fit using the Alterelli, Parisi, and Petronzio O(.cap alpha./sub s/) prescription for calculating P/sub T/ distributions but requires k/sub T/2 of the interacting constituents of the nucleons and pion of 0.88 (GeV/c)2. This k/sub T/2 is larger than the k/sub T/2/sub .pi./ = 0.59 +- 0.05 (GeV/c)2 and k/sub T/2/sub P/ = 0.52 +- 0.05 (GeV/c)2 obtained from the linear extrapolations of the s variation of the of the experimentally observed dsigma/dp/sub T/ distributions to s-O. This implies that first order QCD in the formalism of Altarelli, Parisi, and Petronzio is insufficient to explain of the data.

Book Description
Dimuon production is studied in 400-GeV proton-nucleus collisions. A strong enhancement is observed at 9.5 GeV mass in a sample of 9000 dimuon events with a mass m[mu]+[mu]->5 GeV.
