The one year research program described here was a direct extension of work completed during the 1977 AFOSR/ASEE Summer Faculty Research program at AFRPL. During that program the author and Dr. David Mann, AFRPL, performed the first is situ size measurements of submicron alumina (Al2O3) particles that have been published to date. The new laser diagnostic technique used, Diffusion Broadening Spectroscopy, represents a new advance in the state-of-the-art of submicron particle sizing. The goal of the research described herein was to develop a data reduction procedure to extend the applicability of the technique, so that size distribution half width can be measured, in addition to particle mean diameter. The computer routine was developed to determine particle mean diameter and size distribution half width, given light scattering data obtained at two scattering angles. Sensitivity of the results was investigated and feasibility of future use of the technique in rocket motors and plumes was deduced. (Author).

A theoretical and experimental study on the feasibility of determining the size of a single submicron particle by observing its Brownian motion characteristics has been carried out. The method is based on measurement of the particle motion interferometrically using the light scattered from a pair of intersecting laser beams. The particle is assumed to be in thermal equilibrium with a fluid medium. due to the viscous damping of the fluid, the motion of the particle exhibits relaxation behavior. The relaxation time may be obtained from the interference signal. Knowing the temperature and the viscosity of the fluid, the mass, hence the size of the particle may be determined from the relaxation time. Monte Carlo simulation of the Brownian motion detector response has shown that the relaxation time may be obtained from the statistics of the time between extrema of the signal. A proof-of-concept experiment was conducted using latex spheres of known sizes as test particles. The signal to noise ratio of the experimental setup, however, was not adequate for determining the size of the particles.

In order to verify the various theoretical models of practical combustion systems, experimental measurements are urgently required. A number of laser instrumentation systems which do not disturb the flow are being devised to satisfy this need. This study describes a technique which has been developed for the measurement of droplet or solid particle size distribution. These measurements are required, for example, as the input to mathematical models of combustion which include evaporation. The technique is based on the Fraunhofer diffraction of a parallel beam of mono-chromatic light by the moving droplets. A Fourier transform lens is used to focus a stationary light pattern onto a multielement photo-detector to measure the diffracted light energy distribution. A mini-computer program translates the light energy distribution into the corresponding, unique, droplet size distribution. The droplets or particles are classified into 31 size groups spanning two decades of diameter, (e.g. 5 micrometers to 500 micrometers using a 300 mm focal length Fourier transform lens).

The project is one of several (RP414, 463) supported by EPRI to develop instrumentation for quantitative measurement of particle size distribution and subsequently the fractional efficiency of particulate control devices installed on coal fired utility boilers. A review of particle collection on the wire mesh screens used in the A.P.T. Screen Diffusion Battery (SDB) is presented. The study reports experiments performed on arrays of parallel wires. The results verify the theory of particle collection on single cylinders. A mathematical model is presented for determining submicron particle size distributions from screen diffusion battery data.
