This work investigated the applicability of using hot-wire instrumentation for the measurement of the droplet size distributions of insecticide and herbicide sprays. Under Phase I, mineral oil was used as a model liquid. Tests were performed to determine the effects of eccentric collisions, longitudinal variations along the wire, probe contamination, and temperature stability. A calibration curve was obtained for mineral oil which is different than that of water. This calibration curve shows that the hot-wire approach is accurate for a size range of 1 to 240 micrometers. This range is more than adequate for existing insecticide spray apparatus. Tests using actual insecticides have shown that the calibration curve obtained for mineral oil may be used for at least the two insecticides investigated.

Particle droplet size and count of insecticides are essential parameters to determine the amount of insecticide needed to cover an intended target area. Diameter volume spectrum values such as DV0.5, DV0.1, and DV0.9 describe the application an insecticide is suitable for and its susceptibility to spray drift. The current tool i.e., Artium PDI TK1 Droplet Analyzer used to calculate the droplet size, count and diameter volume spectrum parameters in the industry could be time consuming, costly, and tedious. It is an expensive benchtop tool which can only test sample slides indoor, consequently, it does not give instantaneous results. This thesis proposes a user-oriented, Internet of Things (IoT) based cost-effective portable tool to give a real-time droplet size and diameter spectrum measurement using image processing for insecticide spray.

Spray application is a complex and dynamic process involving many interdependent components. Improvements in pesticide use efficiency will require a more intensive study of the physical and physiochemical parameters controlling droplet dynamics, deposition on defined targets and biological response. The biological effect depends on the toxicological properties of the active ingredient (AI), its formulation, the concentration and pattern of the dose at the point of action. Changes in formulation of a pesticide may result in significant changes in pest response to and hence transfer of a toxin. Encapsulation of insecticides showed significant changes in avoidance/irritant reactions by certain pests vs that recorded for standard formulations. Droplet size also affected the performance of materials tested. Separation of drop (and particle) size, concentration, and formulation effects can be useful in understanding toxin activity and developing accurate parameters for specific targets and crop protection agents.

Classes of liquids associated with different calibrations can be identified by a relatively straightforward measurement of the surface tension. Thus, it is not necessary to perform a detailed optical calibration of every material. Also discussed are the size ranges of various liquids, details of the droplet/wire interaction, aerodynamic effects, effects of the longitudinal temperature distribution, and eccentricity. Various experimental techniques have been developed to recover droplet size distributions emitted from rotary atomizers. These techniques include both single line-of-sight measurements through the center of the spray cloud and volume weighted averaging from multiple passes through portions of the spray. Because the droplet size distribution of a spray is one of the most important inputs into aerial spray prediction models such as AgDRIFT®, a consistent, widely-accepted standard for rotary atomizers should be developed and implemented with regard to this measurement. No such standard currently exists. The present paper summarizes current measurement techniques and develops a simple computer model to predict droplet movement following emission from a rotary atomizer in a wind tunnel. Qualitative comparisons are made with available data to demonstrate the effects of single line-of-sight measurements and weighted averaging from multiple passes.

The need for designers and users of pesticide application equipment to balance the risk of off-target contamination with high product efficacies when using the minimum dose of active ingredient has led to the requirement for more data defining the performance of such equipment. Measurements of the droplet size distribution in sprays from conventional nozzles has shown acceptable levels of consistency between data obtained with different measuring systems enabling such sprays to be classified providing that systems are calibrated with agreed reference nozzles. For sprays with air inclusions different measuring systems have been shown to give comparable and consistent results, and there is now a need to fully integrate such sprays into a revised classification scheme. Temperature of both spray liquid and the surrounding air have been shown to influence droplet size distribution measurements. It is therefore proposed that measurement protocols specify a maximum difference in temperature between the spray liquid and surrounding air of 5°C. For boom sprayers it is not possible to predict accurately the risk of drift from droplet size measurements alone because of the complex detrainment mechanisms involved. It is proposed that standardized wind tunnel procedures be defined that enable the relative risk of drift from different nozzle designs to be quantified. In the future it is likely that more of the information relating to application system performance will be delivered pre-programmed in the units control system or as part of a decision support system.
