Book Description
This thesis reports measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetries in fully reconstructed B° → (D{sup (*){-+}} and B° → D{sup {-+}} [rho]{sup {+-}}) decays in approximately 232 million [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} events, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in California, as published in Ref. [14]. The phenomenon of CP violation allows one to distinguish between matter and antimatter, and, as such, is one of the essential ingredients needed to explain the apparent abundance of matter over antimatter in the universe. The Standard Model describes the observed elementary particles in terms of three generations of quarks and leptons, as well as the weak, electromagnetic, and strong interactions between them. In the Standard Model, CP violation is incorporated in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, which describes the weak interactions between the quarks. The weak interactions between quarks are described by coupling constants that are functions of three real parameters and one irreducible complex phase. The magnitude of all CP violating effects in the Standard Model is related to this complex phase. The measurement of the CP violating phase of the CKM matrix is an important part of the present scientific program in particle physics. Violation of the CP symmetry manifests itself as a non-zero area of the Unitarity Triangle. The Unitarity Triangle needs to be overconstrained by experimental measurements in order to demonstrate that the CKM mechanism is the correct explanation of this phenomenon. No stringent measurement of the CKM-angle [gamma] is yet available.

Book Description
We report on an improved measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating phase? through a Dalitz plot analysis of neutral D meson decays to K{sub s}°??− and K{sub s}°K+K− produced in the processes B{sup {-+}} → DK{sup {-+}}, B{sup {-+}} → D* K{sup {-+}} with D* → D?°, D?, and B{sup {-+}} → DK*{sup {-+}} with K8{sup {-+}} → K{sub S}°?{sup {-+}}. Using a sample of 383 million B{bar B} pairs collected by the BABAR detector, we measure? = (76 ± 22 ± 5± 5){sup o} (mod 180{sup o}), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third reflects the uncertainty on the description of the Dalitz plot distributions. The corresponding two standard deviation region is 29{sup o}

Book Description
This thesis describes the measurement of the branching fractions of the suppressed charmed B0 → D*- a0+ decays and the non-resonant B0 → D*- [eta][pi]+ decays in approximately 230 million [Upsilon](4S) → B$\bar{B}$ events. The data have been collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in California. Theoretical predictions of the branching fraction of the B0 → D*- a0+ decays show large QCD model dependent uncertainties. Non-factorizing terms, in the naive factorization model, that can be calculated by QCD factorizing models have a large impact on the branching fraction of these decay modes. The predictions of the branching fractions are of the order of 10-6. The measurement of the branching fraction gives more insight into the theoretical models. In general a better understanding of QCD models will be necessary to conduct weak interaction physics at the next level. The presence of CP violation in electroweak interactions allows the differentiation between matter and antimatter in the laws of physics. In the Standard Model, CP violation is incorporated in the CKM matrix that describes the weak interaction between quarks. Relations amongst the CKM matrix elements are used to present the two relevant parameters as the apex of a triangle (Unitarity Triangle) in a complex plane. The over-constraining of the CKM triangle by experimental measurements is an important test of the Standard Model. At this moment no stringent direct measurements of the CKM angle [gamma], one of the interior angles of the Unitarity Triangle, are available. The measurement of the angle [gamma] can be performed using the decays of neutral B mesons. The B0 → D*- a0+ decay is sensitive to the angle [gamma] and, in comparison to the current decays that are being employed, could significantly enhance the measurement of this angle. However, the low expected branching fraction for the B0 → D*- a0+ decay channels could severely impact the measurement. A prerequisite of the measurement of the CKM angle is the observation of the B0 → D*- a0+ decay on which this thesis reports. The BABAR experiment consists of the BABAR detector and the PEP-II e+e- collider. The design of the experiment has been optimized for the study of CP violation in the decays of neutral B mesons but is also highly suitable for the search for rare B decays such as the B0 → D*- a0+ decay. The PEP-II collider operates at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance and is a clean source of B$\bar{B}$ meson pairs.

Book Description
This book is a comprehensive introduction to particle physics, bridging the gap between traditional textbooks on the subject and popular accounts that assume little background knowledge. This fourth edition is fully revised, including the most recent ideas and discoveries, and the latest avenues of research. The development of the subject is traced from the foundations of quantum mechanics and relativity, through the formulation of quantum field theories, to the standard model. Research now continues with the first signs of physics beyond the standard model and with the formulation of modern string theory which aims to include a quantum theory of gravity for the first time. This book is intended for anyone with a background in physical sciences who wishes to learn about particle physics. It is also valuable to students of physics wishing to gain an introductory overview of the subject.

Book Description
BES, the Beijing Spectrometer, began its first groundbreaking physics run, thirty years ago, in 1989. This is the first high energy physics experiment in China, and has been unique throughout the world for its thorough and extended coverage of the tau and charm energy region. Since then, the BES detector has undergone steady improvements, upgrading to BESII in 1998 and to BESIII in 2008. Over the same period, the collaboration has expanded from 150 members, across 10 institutions in China and the United States, to about 500 members, across 72 institutions and 15 countries. The physics program, too, has extended from light hadron spectroscopy, tau, and charm physics to the discovery of exotic charmonium-like states, precision tests of the Standard Model of particle physics, and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.This special volume collects the proceedings of the symposium held at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Beijing, in celebration of the 30-year span of achievements and progress at the BES, BESII, and BESIII experiments. Written by many leaders of the BES collaborations, these proceedings document the early days of the BES experiments, important milestones, and the future physics program at BESIII.

Book Description
Measuring the angle [gamma] of the unitarity triangle is an important part of overconstraining the Standard Model's explanation of CP violation and testing for new physics contributions to CP violation. Although there are many ways to measure [gamma], all of them have significant experimental or theoretical challenges. This talk presents progress at the babar experiment toward measuring [gamma] using B meson decays.
