Book Description
Peter Pond, a fur trader, explorer, and amateur mapmaker, spent his life ranging much farther afield than Milford, Connecticut, where he was born and died (1740–1807). He traded around the Great Lakes, on the Mississippi and the Minnesota Rivers, and in the Canadian Northwest and is also well known as a partner in Montreal’s North West Company and as mentor to Alexander Mackenzie, who journeyed down the Mackenzie River to the Arctic Sea. Knowing eighteenth-century North America on a scale that few others did, Pond drew some of the earliest maps of western Canada. In this meticulous biography, David Chapin presents Pond’s life as part of a generation of traders who came of age between the Seven Years’ War and the American Revolution. Pond’s encounters with a plethora of distinct Native cultures over the course of his career shaped his life and defined his reputation. Whereas previous studies have caricatured Pond as quarrelsome and explosive, Chapin presents him as an intellectually curious, proud, talented, and ambitious man, living in a world that could often be quite violent. Chapin draws together a wide range of sources and information in presenting a deeper, more multidimensional portrait and understanding of Pond than hitherto has been available.

Book Description
To the casual onlooker, Dr. Wallace McTavish leads a simple life, but appearances can be deceiving. A successful psychologist, McTavish’s Brooklyn home also doubles as an office in which he conducts his past-life regression therapy, investigating crimes and passions in people’s previous lives. Twenty-four-year-old Laura Tsvetkovsky is a victim of such passion. Born without the use of her legs, she dreams of becoming a dancer. Now she relies on pills and strange trance-like dreams to dull the pain of existing in the present, coping with her sycophantic mother and struggling family. But when she meets Dr McTavish, new possibilities offer her a painful glimmer of hope. Embarking together on a journey through time to her past life in 1592 Catalan, Laura’s eyes are opened to a new world with endless potential and a compelling man who looks at her with his heart in his eyes. But with the terror of the Spanish Inquisition closing in, she and McTavish must work together to learn what they came to discover to ensure Laura’s story meets a happy ending.

Book Description
Michael Patrick Finnigan was a New York City cop and a US Marshal who figured out that following the rules doesn’t always get the job done. Katalin Fiero Dahar was a soldier, spy, and assassin for Spain, who figured out that breaking the rules doesn’t always get the job done. Together, they created St. Nicholas Salvage & Wrecking, a largely illegal bounty hunting operation based in Cyprus and working throughout Europe. Operating under the radar for the presiding judge of the International Criminal Court, they track down the worst of the world’s worst. Someone is kidnapping Middle Eastern refugee children as they flee war-torn countries and selling them into prostitution around the world. Finnigan and Fiero get the assignment to track them down and save the refugees. But when they discover that the perpetrators are a Serbian mobster—with patronage at the highest levels of the United Nations—and a battalion of the Kosovo military, the partners reach out to their “friends” to find justice, including a corrupt banker, a cadre of mercenaries, and a crew of professional thieves. The battle to stop the mass kidnappings ranges from Belgrade and Zagreb, to the Loire Valley and Milan, and to the plains of Kosovo. As Finnigan and Fiero close in, the conspirators realize that the judge of the ICC is the real threat and plan an assassination. Now the partners have to save their patron and the kidnapped refugees from a rogue military force with nothing left to lose.

Book Description
Throughout the development of the American West, prostitution grew and flourished within the mining camps, small towns, and cities of the nineteenth-century Pacific Northwest. Whether escaping a bad home life, lured by false advertising, or seeking to subsidize their income, thousands of women chose or were forced to enter an industry where they faced segregation and persecution, fines and jailing, and battled the hazards of disease, drug addiction, physical abuse, and pregnancy. They dreamed of escape through marriage or retirement, but more often found relief only in death. An integral part of western history, the stories of these women continue to fascinate readers and captivate the minds of historians today.

Book Description
When a wife dies, the survivor is suddenly on his own. This can be especially traumatic if he has depended on her to deal with all the details of their life together. After a disastrous but short-lived first marriage, Mason reconnects with Maika, whom he has never quite forgotten. They get married and, thirty-five years later, when she dies of cancer, he is so shaken by her death that he cannot begin the normal legal processes that are required when a loved one passes, nor can he think about closing his wife's estate, nor is he able to examine his financial situation. Instead, he flees to his cottage. But once he is there, he must clean up the mess left by the last renters. In the process, he meets old friends, and makes new acquaintances, but nothing he does can erase the memories that keep crowding back, of his wife and their life together. His most important encounter is with his long-estranged sister, who is going through her own crisis and appeals to him for help. And this forces him to think seriously about his financial affairs. Reluctantly, Maika had dealt with all their money matters, even though she had urged Mason to at least familiarize himself with their financial status. And now Mason doesn't know where he stands.
