Book Description
A series of tokamak equilibria are studied in order to identify characteristics which may maximize the proportion of toroidal current naturally provided by the bootstrap effect. These plasmas are typical of high field reactors considered by the ARIES (Advanced Reactor Innovation and Evaluation Study) collaboration and are assumed to have rather flat density profiles and broad pressure profiles. With the use of noninductive current drive to provide the seed current it is possible to operate with q/sub axis/ approx. = 2.0; this results in a (bootstrap-assissted) current drive power of P/sup B//sub CD/ - 117 MW and a figure of merit /sub gamma//sup B/ = 1.12 for reference reactor with /bar T//sub e/ approx. = 21 keV. For the reference reactor P/sub f/ = 2880 MW so Q = 24. Without the bootstrap effect the absorbed current drive power would be P/sub CD/ = 285 MW, so T /equivalent to/ 1 - (/sub gamma///sub gamma//sup B)/ = 0.59. 10 refs., 9 figs., 2 tabs.

Book Description
Low aspect ratio tokamaks can potentially provide a high ratio of plasma pressure to magnetic pressure [beta] and high plasma current I at a modest size, ultimately leading to a high power density compact fusion power plant. For the concept to be economically feasible, bootstrap current must be a major component of the plasma current. A high value of the Troyon factor [beta]{sub N} and strong shaping are required to allow simultaneous operation at high [beta] and high bootstrap current fraction. Ideal magnetohydrodynamic stability of a range of equilibria at aspect ratio 1.4 is systematically explored by varying the pressure profile and shape. The pressure and current profiles are constrained in such a way as to assure complete bootstrap current alignment. Both [beta]{sub N} and [beta] are defined in terms of the vacuum toroidal field. Equilibria with [beta]{sub N} ≥ 8 and [beta] - 35% to 55% exist which are stable to n = ∞ ballooning modes, and stable to n = 0, 1,2,3 kink modes with a conducting wall. The dependence of [beta] and [beta]{sub N} with respect to aspect ratio is also considered.

Book Description
Humans do not live by bread alone. Physically we are puny creatures with limited prowess, but with unlimited dreams. We see a mountain and want to move it to carve out a path for ourselves. We see a river and want to tame it so that it irrigates our fields. We see a star and want to fly to its planets to secure a future for our progeny. For all this, we need a genie who will do our bidding at a flip of our fingers. Energy is such a genie. Modern humans need energy and lots of it to live a life of comfort. In fact, the quality of life in different regions of the world can be directly correlated with the per capita use of energy [1.1–1.5]. In this regard, the human development index (HDI) of various countries based on various reports by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) [1.6] (Fig. 1.1), which is a parameter measuring the quality of life in a given part of the world, is directly determined by the amount of per capita electricity consumption. Most of the developing world (~5 billion people) is crawling up the UN curve of HDI versus per capita electricity consumption, from abysmally low values of today towards the average of the whole world and eventually towards the average of the developed world. This translates into a massive energy hunger for the globe as a whole. It has been estimated that by the year 2050, the global electricity demand will go up by a factor of up to 3 in a high growth scenario [1.7–1.9]. The requirements beyond 2050 go up even higher.
