Nocturnes and interiors in the key of blue from the acclaimed painter Matthew Wong Over the course of his brief career, Matthew Wong was celebrated for his paintings evoking diverse historical references ranging from Chinese scroll painting to Van Gogh and Vuillard. His colorful, dappled vignettes of imaginary landscapes and half-remembered interiors have the uncanny ability to, in his words, "activate nostalgia, both personal and collective." This first museum publication features more than 60 of Wong's deeply evocative blue paintings, of intimate interior scenes and luscious nocturnal landscapes, from his Blue Series made between 2017 and 2019. Wong's Blue Series paintings are notable for their saturated and richly varied blue palette and pervasive sense of melancholy, enhanced by solitary figures. The striking compositions reflect Wong's technique of flattening the depth of space between the foreground and background with deft combinations of wet and dry brushwork. The story begins when Katherine Chun is first growing up in Honolulu, where her parents run a local laundry. Unfortunately, a fire erupts in the rear of the laundry and eventually contributes to the sale of the business. Meanwhile, as a teenager and young adult, Katherine finds work in a number of different occupations -- from working in a beauty salon to working in a candy factory. In her 20s, she marries a pipe fitter and welder, Clifford Wong, whose job takes him to the shipyards in San Francisco and then to Hayward. Over time, the marriage has its ups and downs and is threatened when Katherine's believes her husband is having an affair with a good friend. Yet, the marriage survives, and the family grows as Katherine has six children and even more grandchildren, while maintaining strong ties with a growing number of cousins, uncles, and aunts, reflecting the importance of family for Chinese-Americans. The story also features the many activities Katherine enjoys, from traveling to going on jaunts to Las Vegas. The script is based on the real life experiences of my mother Katherine Wong, based on a book I created for her on her 77th birthday. Martin Wong: Human Instamatic explores the work of Chinese American artist Martin Wong (1946-1999), tracing his transition from an introspective youth in San Francisco painting haunting self-portraits, to his subsequent engagements with communities in the Bay Area and later New York City. In the late 1960s and 1970s, Wong became an active participant in the thriving countercultural movement in California, where he collaborated with the radical queer performance groups Cockettes and Angels of Light. In 1978, Wong moved to New York where he could play a pivotal role in the arts scene throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Wong's work of that period captures the vibrancy of the Lower East Side: a resilient, multi-ethnic, bohemian community grappling with an advanced process of gentrification. Diagnosed with HIV in 1994, Wong returned to San Francisco where he lived under the care of his parents until he died in 1999.
