Masturbation remains taboo, and this is not without consequences for the promotion of sexual health. When I was involved in establishing partnerships with community organizations targeting low-income African American women for HIV/STD prevention, a collaborative relationship was canceled specifically because we were planning to address masturbation and homosexuality in the intervention curriculum. I was not surprised about the controversial nature of homosexuality: after all, this topic continues to be contentious in many segments of society. However, perhaps in part because of my background as a native from The Netherlands, a country known for sexual tolerance and freedom, I was astounded to discover that discussing masturbation as part of promoting safer sex was deemed inappropriate. Moreover, while homosexuality has been studied extensively in the field of sexual science, masturbation has received remarkably little attention in sex research. A few years later, when I was looking tor a theme tor the 1999 annual conference of the Midcontinent Region of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, Eli Coleman-co-editor of this volume-suggested the topic of masturbation. He had attempted to publish a special issue of the Journal of Psychology & Human Sexuality on this topic before but without success due to an insufficient number of submissions. Indeed, in her commentary on masturbation, Tiefer (1998) noted that masturbation was the most sensitive topic in the U.S. National Health and Social Life Survey, making both respondents and interviewers the most uncomfortable (Laumann, Gagnon, Michael, & Michaels, 1994). Tiefer went on to argue that masturbation must be appreciated as a complex sexological issue, in need of research examining what masturbation means to different people at different points in their lives (Tiefer, 1998, p. 10). A scientific conference on masturbation would acknowledge masturbation as a key component of sexual health. It was our hope that such a conference would allow us to assess and share current knowledge on masturbation, stimulate research, and lead to the publication of selected papers that would make valuable contributions to the field.

Why is the sexuality of people with intellectual disabilities often deemed “risky” or “inappropriate” by teachers, parents, support staff, medical professionals, judges, and the media? Should sexual citizenship depend on IQ? Confronting such questions head-on, Already Doing It exposes the “sexual ableism” that denies the reality of individuals who, despite the restrictions they face, actively make decisions about their sexual lives. Tracing the history of efforts in the United States to limit the sexual freedoms of such persons⎯using methods such as forced sterilization, invasive birth control, and gender-segregated living arrangements—Michael Gill demonstrates that these widespread practices stemmed from dominant views of disabled sexuality, not least the notion that intellectually disabled women are excessively sexual and fertile while their male counterparts are sexually predatory. Analyzing legal discourses, sex education materials, and news stories going back to the 1970s, he shows, for example, that the intense focus on “stranger danger” in sex education for intellectually disabled individuals disregards their ability to independently choose activities and sexual partners—including nonheterosexual ones, who are frequently treated with heightened suspicion. He also examines ethical issues surrounding masturbation training that aims to regulate individuals’ sexual lives, challenges the perception that those whose sexuality is controlled (or rejected) should not reproduce, and proposes recognition of the right to become parents for adults with intellectual disabilities. A powerfully argued call for sexual and reproductive justice for people with intellectual disabilities, Already Doing It urges a shift away from the compulsion to manage “deviance” (better known today as harm reduction) because the right to pleasure and intellectual disability are not mutually exclusive. In so doing, it represents a vital new contribution to the ongoing debate over who, in the United States, should be allowed to have sex, reproduce, marry, and raise children.

Examining John Keats’s reworking of the romance genre, Rachel Schulkins argues that he is responding to and critiquing the ideals of feminine modesty and asexual femininity advocated in the early nineteenth century. Through close readings of Isabella; or the Pot of Basil, The Eve of St. Agnes, Lamia and ’La Belle Dame sans Merci,’ Schulkins offers a re-evaluation of Keats and his poetry designed to demonstrate that Keats’s sexual imagery counters conservative morality by encoding taboo desires and the pleasures of masturbation. In so doing, Keats presents a version of female sexuality that undermines the conventional notion of the asexual female. Schulkins engages with feminist criticism that largely views Keats as a misogynist poet who is threatened by the female’s overwhelming sexual and creative presence. Such criticism, Schulkins shows, tends towards a problematic identification between poet and protagonist, with the text seen as a direct rendering of authorial ideology. Such an interpretation neither distinguishes between author, protagonist, text, social norms and cultural history nor recognises the socio-sexual and political undertones embedded in Keats’s rendering of the female. Ultimately, Schulkins’s book reveals how Keats’s sexual politics and his refutation of the asexual female model fed the design, plot and vocabulary of his romances.
